IUINITD STAT-"S ARTHUR ooaNELLIER, or nnacu'r, AssAoEusnrrs. i
BARBERS COMB.
Application filed April 28, 192 2 Serial No. 557,210.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR CoRNELLrER, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Dracut, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have i vented certain new and'useful Improvements in Barbers Combs, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to combs for use in the human hair, and more particularly to combs such as are used by barbers in cutting hair.
I am aware that guides have been devised to determine the distance of a comb from the'head whereby the length of the out can be regulated, but this device is for a different purpose.
In cutting hair by barbers, particularly where clippers, and still more particularly where power clippers are used, it is customary for the barber to hold the clippers in one hand and the comb in the other, the clippers resting on and being guided by the comb.
Where a snarl or obstruction is encountered, the clippers frequently slip from their proper position on the comb and make what is known as a gash in the hair because they slip off the comb while still cutting.
This device is a comb having cutter guides which prevent such slipping.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows in elevation an outline of a human head together with the hands of a barber, with a comb of my construction used with hand clippers.
Fig. 2 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1 showing, however, power clippers.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a comb of my construction having guides half the length 4 on} oneside and half the length on the other Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on either of the two lines 4-4 or 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of a comb which tapers from one end to the other, provided with guides of my construction the full. len h on one side only.
ig. '6 is a sectional elevation showing a modified form of guide which I prefer.
In the drawings, A represents a human head, B the hair thereon and C a comb of my construction.
F represents the left hand and G the right of the operator, while Hrepresents hand guides.
clippers having the handles 30 and 31 andfa cutting edge 32.
This cutting edge 32 is ordinarily straight I I I as shown.
. Thecomb includes a back 10 having substantially parallel teeth 11 runnigat substantially right angles therefrom, each tooth having abase 12 and a tip 13.
These'teeth are so cut away that cutter guides 20, running in a line substantially parallel. with but at a. distance from' the bases 12 of theteeth, project outwardly. therefrom thereby forming guiding sil'r faces 21. These guiding surfaces preferably extend in a substantially parallel line with the bases of the teeth as described.
In operating the cutter, one corner of the cutting edge 32 may be pressed against the cutter guides 20 and-moved along as shown in Fig. 1. These cutter guides prevent the clippelps from slipping and making a gash. I
mon type are shown, being propelled by a flexible shaft such as 40. These have a cutting edge shown at 42 which ordinarily is subst antially' straight.
In Fig. 2, the cutting edge 42 is shown as pressed along its length firmly against the line of cutter guides 20. It is obvious that whether the whole length or one corner only is pressed against the cutter guides, it prevents the clippers from slipping.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the cutter guides may extend halfway on one side and halfway on the other of a comb such as C. In Fig. 5, the comb T tapers from the end 48 to the end 49 the bases of the teeth running along the line 50 while the tips of the ig. 2, the power cutters R of any comteeth are represented by line 52 and the line of cutter guides by 51.
In Fig. 6, the cutter guides represented by 21 have an overhang 23 which helps to keep the cutting edge of-the clippers down so that .it will not run over the tops of the I claim 1. The combination in a comb having a straight back and substantially parallel teeth running at substantially right angles ing surface between its base and its tip, said 7 guiding surfaces each having anoverhanging top and fac ng towards and running in a straight line substantially parallel With ing surface between its base and its tip, said but at a distance from the bases of the teeth. guiding surfaces facing towards and run- 2. The combination in acomb having a ning in a straight line. substantially parallel 1 straight back and substantially parallel with but at a distance from the bases of the 5 teeth running at substantially right angles teeth.
therefrom, of a series of cutter guides each I g projecting from a tooth and having a guid- ARTHUR CORNELLIER.
