Description
0. 0. CAREY. PAPERING APPARATUS. APPLIOATION FILED MAY 10. 1908.
924: ,3 1 7. Patented June 8, 1909;
4 ATTORNEYS OLIVER OTIS CAREY, OF CONVERSE, INDIANA.
PAPERING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 16, 1908.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Serial No. 433,166.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER OTIs CAREY, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Converse, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Papering Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to papering apparatus, and more particularly such as combine means for smoothing the paper on the wall after it has been hung, and further means for cutting the paper at the baseboard.
An object of this invention is to provide an apparatus simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, which may be used in paper hanging to smooth the paper in position, to cut thepaper off at the baseboard, and to press out the edges.-
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the class described,
which consists of a brush having a roller.
mounted thereon used in combination with an adjustable member adapted to be mounted at the base-board of a wall, and having a knife edge over which the wall paper extends, the roller of the brush and the knife edge serving to act as a cutter for trimming the pap er.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing a strip of wall paper being smoothed into position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a strip of wall paper being trimmed at the base-board; Fig. 3 is an enlarged top view of the brush; Fig. 4 is an enlarged top view of the body member showing a knife plate for cutting the paper; Fig. 5 is an enarged transverse section showing a strip of paper being trimmed against the knife plate; and Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line 66 of Fig. 1, showing the body member positioned away from a base-board and parallel thereto.
Before proceeding to a moredetailed description of my invention, it should be under stood that I provide a papering apparatus comprising a brush for smoothing paper after it has been pasted upon the wall, and having a roller mounted on the back thereof. I further provide a body member adapted to be arranged at the base-board of a wall, and having suitable supports for holding it in position, which has a knife plate at the upper edge thereof over which the loose end of the wall paper will extend. The roller which is mounted on the back of the brush is then used to run along the edge of the knife plate outside of the paper, thus effecting a cutting action for trimming the paper. The roller has two portions of different diameters. Against the shoulder, which is formed at the juncture of these two sections of the roller, the knife edge in cutting abuts. Further, the larger section of the roller may be used to smooth down the edges of the wall paper between adjacent strips.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide a brush 1, of any common or preferred form, having a back 2 and bristles 3., Mounted on the back of the brush, and preferably at an angle thereto, are brackets 4, between the ends of which a roller 5 is pivotally located.- The latter is formed of two sections 6 and 7 respectively, the former being of smaller diameter than the latter. A shoulder 8 is formed between the sections, the larger of which is preferably rounded. I further provide a body member 9, consisting preferably of a plate of metal or the like and having a lateral flange 10 at the upper edge thereof for engaging at the top of the baseboard of a wall. Rigidly carried by the flange 10 by means of rivets 11, is a knife plate 12 having its outer edge 13 sharpened and extending beyond the face of the body member 9. Slotted supports 14 are slidably arranged on a common pin 15. The pin 15 has a threaded portion adapted to engage a correspondingl threaded recess 16 in a handle 17, the atter when rotated serving to clamp the supports in any desired position. Links 18 pivotally connect the supports 14 to the body member 9. Butterfly nuts 19 having their shanks 20 extending through the body member 9, serve to position the latter away from a base-board parallel thereto, as shown in Fig. 6, and also to secure the links 18 in position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In apparatus of the class described, a body member, a knife plate arranged upon said body member at the upper end thereof, and adjustable supports for securing said body member in position.
2. In apparatus of the class described, a body member having a lateral flange at the upper edge thereof and adapted to be arranged at the base-board of a wall, whereby said flange engages at the top of said baseboard, a knife plate rigidly secured to said lateral flange and having a cutting edge extending beyond the front of said body member, and adjustable supports for mounting said body member.
3. In apparatus of the class described, a body member adapted to be arranged at the base-board of a Wall and having a cutting edge, a pin carried by said body member, slotted supports adjacent, mounted upon said pin, and each having a link connection With said body member, and means upon said pin for clamping said supports in a plurality of positions.
4. In apparatus of the class described, a 15 support, a knife plate on the support, and a roller having a portion 01' greater diameter forming a shoulder between such portion and the remainder of the roller for cooperating with the knife. 20
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence ol two subscribing Witnesses.
OLIVER OTIS CAR EX.
W'itnesses FRANK MonEN, M. E. RAUSMAN.
