TOOL FOR BEVELING AND FINISHING THE EDGES 0F WOODEN PICTURE-MATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,196, dated March 3, 1885. Application filed September 3, 1884. (No model.)
I 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. GAYLORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Beveling and Finishing the Edges of Wooden Picture-Mats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in devices for beveling and finishing the edges of picture-mats, and has for its object to provide a device of this description by means of which an ovolo or other desired surface may be given to the edge of the opening of a picture mat or frame, and is so constructed that stock of greater or less thickness may be worked; and with these ends in View my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully and in detail explained, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may more fully understand its construction and operation, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improvement in operative position, with the material to be worked shown in section; Fig. 2, a top view of Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a central vertical longitudinal section through the handles, showing the blade in elevation, the method of securing the same, and the strip in position in the recess.
Similarletters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A B are handles, which I preferably form by casting from metal, handle A having the downwardly-projecting gage I; and C D are plates adapted to be secured upon the tops of said handles by screws E or other suitable means. Both the handles and platesfaforesaid are recessed the former upon their upventing the latter from gouging the wood or cutting away the edge thereof next the gage. As the blade is held by clamping between the plates and handles, it will be adjustable longitudinally at any point for the accommodation of stock of any thickness. It is triangular in cross-section, with the apex of the triangle at the top.
It is intended that blades of various cutting contours be used with the same handles, as they are readily removable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the handle, recessed as described, and having secured therein the blade, a metal strip lying in the recess and against the lower side of the blade, whereby the latter is prevented from. cutting the edge of the wood next the gage, substantially as described.
2. The combination of handles A B, constructed and recessed as described, blade F, plates C D, adapted to clamp the blade to the handles, and strip H, lying in the recess of the handle and against the bottom of the blade,
all arranged as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD L. GAYLORD. Witnesses:
S. S. WILLIAMSON, W. T. HAVILAND.
