Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. Knnrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall- Paper Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wall paper cutters;
The object of thisinvention is to provide a cutter especially adapted for trimming the edges of lengths of wall paper evenly and uniformly and is equipped with a novel roller and cutting, means, whereby the edge of the paper after being cut will be preventedfrom rolling up or curling after it is cut.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wallpaper cutter, which is equipped with novel means for clamping the same to a table so that the body of the cutter may be moved at various angles with relation to the table when cutting the lengths of paper in various configurations,
A further object of this invention is to provide a wall paper cutter which is adapted to cut off any length of paper and to cut across the paper dividing it in lengths as the paper is-rolled out on the supportingframe.

lVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claim hereto appended.

Referring more particularly to thedrawings, the numeral 1 designates a; table or other suitable support upon which my improved device is adapted to beapplied.-
My improved wall paper cutter comprises asupporting base 2, which is constructed of wood or any other suitable material and is substantially triangularincross section and the base of the supporting body is provided adjacent its upper edge withthe 1on gitudinally extending cut out portion 3, which defines the shoulder 4:, having. the horizontalupper surf-ace 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. 4
A metal plate 6' issecured tothe upper face of the body; 2 and extends longitudinally thereon and is rigidly secured-thereto by suit-able fastening means 7,-suchas rivets, screws or the like. The forward edge of the plate 6 projects forwardly beyond the vertical wall of the cut out portion 3 and is in a substantially horizontal plane as at 8. The horizontal portion overlying the cut out portion 3 is flush with the vertical Wall 9 of the shoulder 4, thus defining a longitudinally extending groove, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
A substantially L-shaped metal guide plate 10 is secured by its horizontal flange to the under side of the body 2 by suitable rivets, screws or the like designated 11. Thus its vertical flange 12 is arranged at a spaced distance from the vertical face 9 of the shoulder 4 of the body 2, thus defining the longitudinally extending slot in which is slidably arranged the standard 13, which constitutes a frame. 1
The standard 13 extends vertically up through the slot defined by the guide plate 10 upwardly beyond the upper surface of the horizontal portion of the plate 6, and this standard is provided on its inner face adjacent its lower end with a laterally extending projection 14, which is substantially rectangular in cross section and is adapted to be slidably arranged between the hori- Zontal shoulder 5 and the under side of the horizontal portion 8 of the plate 6 and in the cut out portion 3 of the body 2.
The upper end of the standard is bent angularly in a horizontal plane as at 15, and has rigidly secured thereto, as at 16, a fiat spring member 17, which spring member extends rearwardly' and downwardly as at 18 and looped back upon itself as at 19 to provide the horizontal parallel upper bar 20, which bar extends forwardly beyond the standard 18. Asubstantially U-shaped member 21 is secured by its web to the under side of the arm 20 as at 22, and has pivotally secured or journaled in the lower ends of its arms, the transverse shaft 23.
A roller 24 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 23 and is located between the arms of the member 21. A cutting disk 25 of a di ameter larger than the roller 24 is keyed or secured to the transverse shaft 23.
The peripheral edge of the disk defines a cutting edge 26, which is provided by the beveling of the opposite side faces of the disk 25 outwardly. The roller 25 i keyed to the shaft 23 and has secured to one side, the disk 26 and the roller and disk are mounted upon the shaft for rotation therewith, thus it can be seen that upon movement of the frame in the slot, defined by the guide plate 10 and the cut out portion 3, that the disk and roller will be rotated. The spring member 17 normally tends to urge the roller into engagement with the upper side of the horizontal portion 8 of the plates 6, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A longitudinally extending handle member 27 is arranged to extend in the longitudinally extending cut out portion 3 and has its inner end secured to the rectangular lateral projection 14 on the standard 13 as at 28 and its opposite end extends forwardly beyond the free end of the body 2 and terminates in a handle 29, facilitating the drawing of the cutter forwardly and forcing the same rearwardly after the operation of cutting the paper has been completed.
The body 2 is provided adjacent one end centrally of its side edges with an opening 30 through which there is adapted to be removably arranged or fitted, a bolt 31, which has fitted on its lower end, a nut 32. A substantially V-shaped plate 33 is provided in its apex with an opening 34. The plate is also provided with an arcuate slot 35, which slot is adapted to aline with a transversely extending slot 36, located in the base 2 adjacent one end and centrally of the side edges thereof.
A pair of U-shaped yokes 37 are secured by their webs to the under side of the plate 33 adjacent each end of the base thereof, the arms of the yokes curve upwardly and outwardly as at 38 and have pivotally secured therein, the clamping members 39, which members are eccentrically mounted in the arms 38 and areprovided on their outer surfaces with the serrated surface 40, which facilitates the clamping of the plate to the under side of a table, support or the like 1 as shown.
The plate 33 is secured to the under side of the base 2 by the bolt 31 and nut 32, thus pivotally securing the plate to the base member, and the base member and plate are rigidly secured to the support 1 by the clamping member 39.
A bolt having a shank 41 is provided at one end with an annular flange 42, which has secured on its upper side the operating member 43, the outer end of the shank being provided with oppositely extending lateral projections 44, and the shank and projections are adapted to extend through the slot in the body 2 and through the arcuate slot 35 of the plate and turned for rigidly supporting the body 2 at various angled positions upon the surface of the table or support 1.
In operation, the device is clamped to a table as described, the paper is laid across the table and over the plate 6, the base 2 is then adjusted to compensate for the line of travel of the disk and roller, the handle 29 is grasped by the operator, the device is pulled toward him thus the disk cuts the paper leaving a straight edge or any desired edge required, and the roller engages the edge after it is cut, preventing the same from curling or wrinkling after being cut.
hen it is desired after the paper has been cut, the handle is forced rearwardly placing the machine back to the opposite end of the base in its )initial position and it is ready for another operation.
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described including a base, a plate secured to the upper and lower sides of the base and terminating adjacent one end thereof, defining a vertical and longitudinal slot, a vertical standard slidable in the vertical slot, a projection carried by the standard and slidably arranged in the longitudinal slot, a U-shaped knife supporting frame, a spring secured to the web of the frame by one end, a transverse shaft journaled in the arm of the frame, a roller and disk knife secured to the shaft for rotation therewith, said disk being located to move in the vertical slot, means for connecting the free end of the spring to standard for movement therewith, means for actuating the standard to move it in its respective slot, a plate pivotally secured to the base, clamps carried by the base to facilitate the securing of the same to a table or support, said plate provided with an arcuate slot coinciding with vertical slot in the base, and a thumb screw extending through the vertical slot and arcuate slot of the plate to permit the base to be adjusted at various angles with relation to the plate, as and forthe purpose specified.
