Be it known that I, HAS BRoUoK ALLIGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kingston, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Nail-Grip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of this invention is to provide means by which nails may be readily drawn from the material in which they are driven, and especially to facilitate the withdrawal of nails the heads of which are set below the surface of the material carrying them. When nails are driven with their heads ush with the wood, an ordinary claw-hammer is useless, and my invention seeks particularly to provide a device for engaging the heads of nails so driven.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

The nail-grip comprises two duplicate sections a, connected by an intermediately-situated pivot h and formed with coacting jaws a and shanks a2 opposite the jaws. An eX- pansive spring c presses the jaws a apart and tends to move the Shanks d2 together, and a thumb-screw d, which is carried in one of the Shanks a9 and works against the other, serves to move the shanks a2 in opposite directions, bringing the jaws a together.

In the use of the device the jaws a' are driven into the wood at opposite sides of the head of the nail, so as to lie level with or below the head, and then the thumb-screw 03 is operated to engage the jaws with the head. The jaws a are of a thickness reduced with respect to the other parts of the sections a, so that a claw-hammer may be engaged with the jaws, as indicated in Fig. l, and by operating the claw-hammer in the usual manner the nail-grip, with the nail attached, may be raised, thus withdrawing the nail from the wood.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A nail-grip, comprising two pivotallyconnected sections, each having a jaw of reduced thickness to facilitate the engagement of a claw-hammer therewith, a spring tending to push the two jaws apart, and a thumbscrew working with the sections oppositely to the spring.

2. A nail-grip, having two pivoted sections each having a jaw to engage the nail, said jaws being of reduced thickness to form shoulders to facilitate the engagement of a clawhammer therewith.
