AUNITE *IAfrns Artnr nov CARTER, or BULL RUN, vIneINIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent N o. 663,328, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed July 5, 1900. Serial No. 22,587. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.;
Be it known that I, ROY CARTER, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Bull Run, in the county of Fairfax and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinventionrelatesto wrenchesin general and more particularly to monkey-wrenches, the object of the invention being to provide a construction wherein by slight changes the wrench will be adapted for a variety of uses, further objects and advantages of the invention being evidentfrom the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench equipped for cutting pipe. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section, taken through the jaw portion of the wrench and showing the manner of attaching the removable supplemental jaws or faces. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective'view showing the lower jaw of the wrench and a portion of the stem. Fig. 4 is a perspective view'V of a pipe-gripping face or supplemental jaw.
Referring now to the drawings, the wrench comprises a stem portion 5, having a head 6 at its outer end, which forms the fixed jaw of. the wrench, the stem being rectangular in cross-section and having a lateral lug 7, for a purpose which will be presently explained, the stem below this lug being adapted for attachment of a handle 8 in the usual manner, the upper end of the handle resting against the Iiange 9, which forms a continuation of the lug.
Upon the stem 5 above the Iiange 9 is disposed a slidable jaw 10, in which is formed a cylindrical threaded recess 11, with which is engaged an adjusting screw l2, having a spindle 13, which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 14 inthe lug 7. The screw 12 has a thumb portion 15 in the form of a cross-sectionally-angular ange, and passed radially therethrough is a slidable pin 16, having headed ends to prevent its displacement. Thus by drawing the pin to one limit of its 4slidable movement andthen to the other it may be used as a lever in rotating the screw, and thus firmly clamping the jaws upon an object to be held.
rThe jaws proper are adapted for interchangeable connection of a series of different supplemental jaws or faces, and the xed jaw or head 6 has a tapered cross-sectionally-rectangular recess 17 ,which is adapted to receive a corresponding projection 18 upon the supplemental jaw or face 19, a pin 20 being then passed laterally through alining perforations 2l and 22 in the head and the projection of the supplemental jaw to hold the supplemental jaw in place.
The upper face of the slidable jaw has a central longitudinal Iiauge or rib projecting therefrom in the direction of the iixedjaw, there being thus formed a shoulder 26 at each side of the rib, and the outer face or face adjacent the fixed jaw is recessed, as shown at 27, this recess extending from a point adjacent one end of the rib to a point adjacent the opposite end and extending entirely across the rib.
The several supplemental jaws that are adapted for interchangeable attachment to the slidable jaw each have a recessed base, as shown in Figs. 1 and at of the drawings, the end portions of the recess being deeper than the intermediate portion thereof to form a locking-block 28, which engages with the recess 27, while the ends of the legs 29 and 30 of each supplemental jaw, which result from the formation ci' the longitudinal slot, rest against the shoulders 26. The supplemental jaw is thus held against outward sliding movement by engagement of the block with the recess, while the block is held in the recess by pressure between the two jaws 6 and 10.
The several supplemental jaws have different working faces, as shown, and-with the construction described it will be seen that they may be readily applied and removed and that when in position they are held firmly during the operation of the wrench.
It will of course be understood that in practice the supplemental jaws may have any desired specic working faces and that any suitable materials and proportions ma57 be used Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- A Wrench comprising a ixed jaw and a movable jaw, one of said jaws having a longitudinal rib extending in the direction of the other jaw and forming shoulders at the sides of the rib, said rib having a transverse recess intermediate of its ends, and a supplemental jaw adapted to fit upon the ribbed jaw, the supplemental jaw having a longitudinal slot f mental jaw.
to receive the rib and having a block within its` slot to enter the recess of the rib and prevent outward displacement of the supple- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RoY CARTER.
