To all whom it may comer m Be. it known that T1,;ERANK H. STQNER; a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding. at Monroe, in the countyv of. Monroe l and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land Rollers, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the acconnpanyingdrawings. s l
This invention relates to land rollers or the like and refers more particularly to an improved roller with which is combineda scmper for "removing any clogs of dirt'or other matter adhering to the surface oithe roller.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a land roller or the like with a I scraper which will remove from the surface of the roller any clogs of dirt or other material; to so construct and arrange 1 the scraper that it will operate irrespective of thedirectionof rotation of the roller; to-
provide a construction which can be economically manufactured and conveniently applied-to rollers 110w 1n use; to PPOVlClG means for resillently pressing the scraper toward the surface of the roller andmeans for preventing the springs 3 from pushing. the scraper toward the rollermore thana' predetermined distance; to provide a construction' in which the handle of theroller can be utilized as a guide means for the scraper; and in general to provide a new and l improved construction of the character above referred to.
In" the drawings Figurel is a top plan view, partly 111G807 tion of roller embodying my invention;
roller which'at its opposite end is provided 1 withhearings B and. C to which is secured the handle ends D and E. While the handle construction could be of various forms, in the particular one illustrated the ends D and E are; connected by a transverse portion F and the handle proper is formed in the shape of a {U-shaped member G.
In orderto prevent clogs of dirt or other matter adhering, to. the surface of the roller and their interfering with the action, means tnnn nonnnn. I

are provided for automatically scraping off from the, surface of theroller any matter adhering thereto. In detail the scraper comprises an angle shaped bar H having transverse; flanges H and H each of which are notched at J near the end. These notches fit over the end or side portions E and D of the handle and thus the latter serve as guides for the scraper while, permitting the latter a relatively free movement toward and from the surface of the roller. It will be noticed that the flange H has a scraping edge IQ while the flange H has a corresponding scraping edge K Thus the same scraping action will take place irrespective of the direction of rotation of the roller.
In addition to being guided by the handle the scraper bar H is normally spring pressed toward the roller by springs M and M" sleeved upon studs N and N, which springs are interposed between the scraper plate and the transverse portion F of the handle. The studs N and N are each provided with a threaded end 0 which is screwed into the angle bar H while the opposite ends project through apertures P and P formed in the transverse portion H and are provided with adjustablewing nuts Q, and Q. This arrangement permits the operator, by tightening up the wing nuts to limit the amount of movement of the scraper bar toward the roller. Thus while the springs force the scraper yieldably toward the roller the two members can be kept apart by adjusting the wing nuts; this will prevent any unnecessary i friction between the scraperand the roller.
" v While I have shown and described the invention as applied to what is known as a hand roller, it is not necessarily limited to this particular type of roller since it could roller.
2. The combination with a roller, anda handle comprising spaced side portions pivotally connected to the roller, of a scraper having a sliding engagement with said por tions of the handle, and means for positioning said scraper wlth reference to said roller. 3. The combination with a roller and a 5 handle therefor, comprising spaced side portions, of a scraper for said roller comprising an angle bar having its ends notched to fit over the side portions of the handle.
4. The combination with a roller, of a 10 scraper therefor, comprising an angle bar having its flanges projecting toward the roller and arranged to act as a'scraper for Copies of this patent may beobtained for said roller when the roller is turned in either direction.
5. The combination with a roller, of a scraper therefor, comprising an angle bar having its flanges pro ect1ng toward the roller and arranged to act as a scraper for FRANK H. sToNER.
