Description

E. L. CANNON.
TOOL FOR SPREADING ROOFING MATERIAL.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. II [914.
Patented June 29, 1915.
EDSON L. CANNON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
TOOL FOR SPBEADING ROOFING MATERIAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915.
Application filed August 17, 1914.. Serial No. 857,085.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnsoN L. CANNON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Spreading Roofing Material, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved form of tool for spreading roofing tar and similar semi fluid or viscous substances, so as to enable the operator to distribute the material evenly over the surface to be coated.
The device comprises a scraping blade of leather rubber fiber or other yielding material and a clamping means therefor and devices for throwing the material forward and downward in the direction of movement of the spreading device and in the path of the scraping blade so as to redistribute the material and constantly present it in front of the blade in a sheet of even thickness throughout.
The spreading devices are adapted to operate when the spreading tool is moved backward as well as forward, thus increasing the usefulness of the device.
The invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts and construction of details hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
In these views A is a scraping blade secured between two similar sheet metal plates 13 and B. The upper edges of these plates are turned outwardly and downwardly at b, b, and a suitable socket G for a handle D is secured to the two clamping plates B, B.
The object of the outwardly and downwardly curved upper edges of the clamping plates is to assist the scraping edge in distributing the material evenly in the path of the scraper so that the scraping edge can readily act upon it.
The material, such as cement, tar, and other rather thick substance, is thrown down upon the floor or roof surface to be covered in a pile and the scraper is set therein, the surface of the pile being irregular and the thickness of the pile uneven. As soon as the scraper is pulled through the material it will rise upon the clamping plates and will be thrown or sprayed forward in such a manner as to spread it in a coating of even thickness in advance of the scraper and the amount of work for the spreader to perform remaining is therefore greatly lessened and 'an even coating much more quickly produced.
The scraping blade is preferably formed with one straight edge aand with one edge fluted or provided with curved recesses a, a, to enable it to be used in coating corrugated roofing. Any desired shape however can be given to the edges of the blade.
Having described the invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a spreading device, a spreading blade, and clamping plates therefor, the upper edges of said plates being bent outwardly and downwardly, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a spreading device, a spreading blade, and a clamping plate upon each side thereof, the upper edges of said plates curved outwardly and downwardly to project material spread in advance of said blade, and means for attaching a handle to said plates.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand this 20 day of May 1914:.
EDSON L. CANNON.
In presence of WM. M. MONROE, P. BUGHWALD.
