To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnonen Gnossour, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ladies hair combs and similar articles, such as side combs, back combs, hair pins and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and effective fastening means for articles of this character for securing the same in the hair, whereby their loss or displacement will be prevented.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a comb embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through one of the end teeth thereof, showing the detent in projected position. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the detent in retracted position. Fig. at is a detail section on the line 4=-l of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a hair comb having intermediate teeth 2 and end teeth 3, the latter being hollow to form inclosing casings for the fastening devices, one of which is employed in connection with each end tooth.

Each fastening device comprises a detent 41 mounted upon a pin or rivet 5 for pivotal movement at a point adjacent the lower end of the teeth, which latter is provided with a slot 6 to permit the detent to swing upward to a substantially horizontal position and project across the space between said end tooth and the adjacent intermediate tooth, and to swing downwardly to a substantially vertical position in which it is housed within the casing, allowing the end tooth to enter and leave the hair without interference in applying and removing the comb. WVhen projected across said space, it will be apparent that the detent will pass through the hair and thus fasten the comb in position against loss or displacement.

The inner end of the detent is pivotally connected with the lower end of a rod or stem 7 extending vertically within the tooth 8 and projecting above the same upon the outer side of the body or back of the comb, so that by moving said rod upwardly or downwardly the detent may be projected or retracted. To the upper end of the rod is secured a button or finger piece 8, fastened to a stem 9 passing through the rod and through a slot 10 in the back or body 1 of the comb. This slot is vertically arranged and has upper and lower lateral. oll'sets 11 and 12 into which the stem may be adjusted by a lateral swinging movement of the rod, by which the latter will be pos tively locked in its two positions to hold the detent retracted or projected. The rear end of the stem 9 carries av ashcr 13 to prevent its forward displacement, and in order to prevent possibility of a casual unlocking movement of the rod, a spring 1 1 is provided within the hollow end tooth, said spring being fixed at one end to the outer side wall of said tooth and arranged to hear at its free end against the rod to press it against the inner side wall of the tooth, in which position the stem 9 will be held. seated within either of the offsets 11 or 12 with which it is engaged.

\Vhile I have shown and described my invention as applied to a comb, it will be understood that it may be employed in eonnection with hair pins and other similar articles, and it will be seen that by its means the comb or article may be fastened securely in position in the hair against any possibility of casual loss or displacement under all ordinary conditions of service.
