To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MICHAEL J. FARRELL and PATRICK J. Down, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Leominster, in the county of orcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrettes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to barrettes, the object of the invention being to provide a de vice of this character constructed in such manner to more etliciently grasp the hair of the wearer than is possible with the ordinary form of barrette.
It is highly desirable to have the barrette so constructed that it will so firmly and tightly grasp the hair of the wearer as to prevent undesirable looseness or wabbling of the barrette.
These objects we accomplish by means of a structure. one embodiment of which is set forth in the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure 1 is an inner side view of a barrette constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an inner side perspective view of the hinge end of the barrette, Fig. & is an inner end elevation of said barrette, Fig. 5 is aninner side elevation of the body of the barrette, illustrating a hinge member and a hook member hereinafter described, Fig. 6 is an edge elevation of said hook member, Fig. 7 is a face view of said hook member, and Fig. S is a detail view illustrating a rubber band employed in connection with the device.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the body portion of a barrette, 6 the tongue thereof, 7 the hinge portion thereof, and 8 the clasp portion thereof. These parts are all substantially of the usual construction, the invention residing particularly in the provision of a pair of hook members 9 and 10, one located ateach end of the barrette body and over which a loop or band of rubber 11 is stretched. The tongue 6 passes downwardly between the two side strands of the rubber band.

hen the tongue of the barrette is passed through the hair of the user and is forced toward the body portion thereof to engage its free end with the clasp 8 in the usual and well known manner, that portion of the hair that lies between the tongue and the body of the barrette is forced downwardly between the side strands of the rubber band, (see Fig. 3) whereby a comparatively wide bearing of the barrette and the parts carried thereby is had and the barrette may be much more snugly and firmly secured in position than is the case with the ordinary form of barrette. While we have illustrated a rubber band for this purpose, it is apparent that any other elastic material may be employed.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and etlicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention, what we claim is:
1. The combination with a barrette body and a tongue therefor, of hooks mounted at opposite ends of the barrette body, and an elastic band engaged with said hooks and between the side strands of which the tongue is adapted to pass.
2. The combination with a curved barrette body, of a wide hook member secured thereto at each end thereof, an elastic band engaging with said hooks and extending in a straight line between said hooks, and a tongue conforming substantially to the curvature of the barrette body and pivoted between the side strands of said elastic band.
