Description
E. G. JOHNSON.
Patented Jan. 10, 1911 CHEF.
To @ZZ whore it may concern: v
I Be it known that EDGAR G. '.orinsoN', a citizen of the United States, Aresiding` :it
ABuckhannon, in the county of Upsbur and State of vWest Virginie, have invented e new and useful Culi, of which the following is n. speciication. A
It is the object of this imf'entionto pro vvide 'n cuff, so constructed that it iney be connected to the end of n sleeve, intermediate tbe ends of the cuit", the construction being` suoli that when one end of they cuff beco'xne's soiled, the seid end may be turned within the sleeve, to expose the other end.
`irnother object of the invention is to pr vide :t cui which may be adapted to a sleeve as hereinbefore described, or, Adesired, be
' Worn in the usual manner. I
portions. size, ond minor details oi the strue-l ture may. be inode, wit-linut departing t'roxn the spirit or sncriiicing any ot the advantages of the invention.'
In the a'cconipenyinfr drawings, wherein similar numerals of re 'erence nre employed to denote eorrespondin0A partsf-lfigure l is e perspective of a entr' constructed in no. cordance with my invention, and attached to the sleeve of a shirt or other garment; Fig. 2
shows the cuile in elevation; shows the seme in section; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail, designed to show the manner in which the sleeve is attached to the cui", and the manner in which the component parte of the cud' are connected; and Fig. 5 is n section of e 1nodiied forni of the invention.
The culiI described herein, is of laminated construction. consisting of an outer loyer l,
l the edges of which are. folded over as denoted by the numeral 2Q A lining, adopted to give stiifness to the cnf, is disposed adjacent the outer layer l and engaged by the folded over portions 2 of Seid loyer, the said lining.;1 being denoted by the numeral The inner 'wall of the cui?? consists of en upper portion i and o lower portion 6,
the'
S-peciicetion of Application filed `Beeember l portion et being folded over se shown at 5, and tire porton (3 being,1 folded over es shownet The portions 5 and of the inner Wall :ire brought into Contact with the portion 2 olf the outer layer i, :is clearly siloyvn Fig. 3 of t-iie 'drawing/gs, mi stitched l ener ns sliorv et 5.2i, to de: the edges o tire ont?.
The portions and G of the cuit oit snticient l may overlap et their :i ze portion 'i of tbe cm3l is to den unen itsel es denoted by tire numeral 8, nnd'ibis portion, 3 is adopted 'to overhang tbe sdliocented ot the portion The portion tin-nenn ried across tbe edge of the I vortion 'as shown rit-9, the coge, l() of the portion being; disjiosed between the portion sind tile lining 3 of the cud.
By means of stitching l1, tile porons l, 3, 6, and ere united, so tiret banging oi tbe portion li In. n recess in the inner Well of t1. e cu the recess thus formed, the A sleeve 1Q is adapted to be insei' ed. le unites the portions l,
8. By this constrnction, the lee've i2 iswlecured to t-lie cult, Lbe constri c ion being'sucb that on unusually strongnnion effected, so tluit the entf nniy ree `ily be turned end for end, either during tine process of drying, or Wliiie tiie'cuii being wor Without teeringfor injuring the cuff. More` over, tbe'roundedy portion of tbe fold 8 Well adapted to receive the sleeve i2 when the cud isutnrned end for end, Witlioizat nn.- dulyrayingor Wearing die sleeve, "no roetterbow the curi' may be sterched.
A culi constructed in the menner above described may be'n'orn in the usual manner without attracting 3any ettention due to peculiarities of construction, the cud being provided witli the usuel no ttonlioles 15, adopted to receive the vsleeve link.
ln Fig. 5 of the drewings, n slight modiu ficntion of tbe invention is shown. The medie tication consists in carrying the outer layer 16 over the edges of tbe lining 3, to torni the upper -portion 17 of the inner Wall and to torni the lower portion 18 thereot, both tne inner and tbe outer loyers of the cu being,` in such case, fashioned from e single stripl of materiel.
The portions f2, 5 and T of the cui?, hereinn before applied speciiicnlly to the upper end lower edges of tlie enti?, nre duplicated upon g so -shown in Fig.. l of the drawin until the outstanding edges of t e cud? be- .the usual manner, and. liinattached to-the by means of the stitching denoted by the the ends of the cuff, the ends of the cu being stitched together as shown 'at .1.9, the said stitching serving to hold down the extremities of the :folded portion 8.
In operation, the cuiibeing disposed as is worn come soiled, whereupon the said soiled eddes are turned Within lthe cuff", to resent Ifor Wear, the opposite edge oi' the cu and like- Wise to present an opposite side of the cud.
'It will be seen that the device calls for no specific form, of sleeve, the construction of the and", moreover, being such that, if desired, the fold 8 may-be starehed and ironed down, the cui? in such case being Wornin numeral 14E, be assembled with the sleeve of a garment and put upon the niarket in the forni shown in Fig. .i of the drawings` However, should there be little call for an?? attached cuit, the ends ma be put upon they marketior use in the or inary manner, itv
ends and to stamp the same as an unnished product. The purchaser may, at his option, buy a garment With the cu attached there to, as shown in Fig. l, or, if he so desires, purchase the cui' alone, of thedrawings. When the culi1 is purchased alone, the Ysaine may at any time be attached to a garment Which the purchaserl may already own, he being therefore enabled to provide himself Wit-h the structure shown in Fig. l of the drawings, Without being compelled to purchase the entire garment. f
Having thus described the 1 invention, what is claimed is A culi' consisting of a lining and a. single piece of material completely inclosing the lining to fornithe inner and outer layers of the cuff, the said piece of material being folded over the edges of they lining, the ends ofthe said-piece of material being overlapped, and one of said ends being folded uponitself and carried over the edge of the other endto form a sleeve-receiving recess in the cuff, the extremity of therst named end being disposed, between the second named end and the lining, and securedto the lining and to the outer layer of the cu".
"In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have-hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
' EDGAR G. JOHNSON. `Witnesses:
,being noted that there are no ragged edges, Qr other features tending to disfigure the i J. G. HALL, W T. HEFNER.
as shown inmFig. 2
