UNITED STATES PATENT "O FICE.
WILLIAM H. HARRIS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR SECURING BOOT-LEG TOPS TO TROUSERS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,676, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed April 3, 1889. Serial No. 305,903. (No model.)
To alf'whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Boot-Leg Tops to Trousers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device for securing boot-leg tops to trousers for the purpose of attaching them together for the use of firemen, ladder-men, linemen, cavalry-men, lumbermen, and others engaged in employments necessitating the use of long-legged boots and having the bottoms of their trousers tucked inside, and is designed especially for the use of firemen, cavalry-men, and others who are obliged to dress quickly upon short notice; and it consists in povidinga band of suitable material fitted to the boot-leg top, preferably upon the inside, and provided with studs or buttons adapted to pass through suitable openings or button-holes in the boot-leg top and corresponding holes in the knees of the trousers. These trousers may be made of suitable material with the legs shortened and contracted at the bottom, so as to lit snugly around the boot-leg at the point of attachment, or they maybe of usual size and length andprovided with button-holes adapted to said studs, and when not attached to the boots worn in 5 the usual way.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation or view showing my device attached as described; Fig.2, a section on the line 0000; Fig. 3, a side view with trousers turned down; Fig. 4:, a detail of band; Fig 5, one of the buttons employed.
A represents the boot; B, the trousers; D, the band; C, the studs; E, the button-holes; F F, boot-straps. I
For dressing quickly it will be found convenient on retiring for the night to leave the trousers-legs turned inside out down over the boot-tops, as shown in Fig. 3, according tothe custom of firemen, and to which practice this device is adapted. The band D maybe circumferentially extended and contracted by permitting the ends to lap by each other for fitting to difi'erent sizes of boot-tops. The h eads and shanks may be provided with screwthreads and secured together in that manner, as shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention,'what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with the trousers having holes E, the boots provided with holes arranged around the circumference of their tops, and the band D, of the separable buttons for connecting said boots, trousers, and band together, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. HARRIS.
