HARRY S. GRIFFITHS ANDJ. C. CARY, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent o. 98,054, dated December 21,-1869.
V IMPROVEMENTAIN SUSPENSION-CLIP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY S. GRIFFITHS and J. C. CARY, of the cit-y, county, and State oi' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Show-Caid Suspension-Rings; and we do hereby declaie that the following is a full, clear,"and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 is a front view of our improved show-card suspension-ring. y
Figure 2 represents the same, as attached to a showcard.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line a: x, iig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
f Our invention has for its object to furnish animproved suspension-ring, for suspending showlcard's, which shall be simple in-coustruction, and easily attached to the card, and which s hall, at the same time, be so formed as to take a tirm vhold upon the card, and not be lia-ble to tear out; and i lt consists in the ring, constructed and secured to the card in the manner hereinafter more fully described.
A is the suspension-ring, which is out out of sheetmftil, and left plain, or struck up into au ornamental form.
rJhe part a', that is lcut out of the upper part of the plate, to form t-he hole or opening to receive the naill co1- hook fi'om which the show-card is to be suspended, is separated from the body of the plate only upon three sides, and is bent down to lie parallel with the lower part of the plate, so as to leave a space to receive the upper edge of the show-card B, and which is 'then secured in place upon said show-card by indenting or puncturing the said plate upon onevor both sides, so that the burr thus formed may indent or puncture the show-card B at the same time, vand secure the suspension-ring and card firmly to each other. It will be observed, that the bottom of the recess forms a stop,`agaiust which the edge of the card B strikes,
so that it will be always attached squarely to said card.
The ring` may be indented, to secure it to the card, by means of a punch and hammer, or with a tool prepared expressly for this purpose, as may be convenient.
The lower part of the plateoi' the show-card ring may be struck up into any desired appropriate orfanciful form, as, for instance, it may be struck up t0 resemble a padlock, the indentations or punctures being made where the key-hole would' naturally be.
By this construction, the edge of the card will be clamped between the body or plate of the ring and the turned-over parta', so as t-'obe firmly and securely heldand so as not Ato be liable to be torn oli, as is the case when the ring is vsecured to the card by points, passed through the card, and turned down upon the other side of said card, in the usual manner.
Having'thus described our invention,
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- `The show-card suspension-ring A a', constructed and secured to the show-card substantially in the man-- ner herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of our invention signed by us, this 3d day of July, 1869.
HARRY S'; GRIFFITHS.
J. C. CARY.
