Description

/ i E. J. MEAE'L.
CIGARETTE MACHINE. APPLIOE'IION FILED nuls, 1909.
'Patented Dec; 20,1910.
@Hummm UNiTED srnrns PAQENT OFFICE.
PHILIF JACOB MEAHL, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY.
CIGARETTE-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP JACOB MEAHL, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, haye invented certain Ynew and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Machines, of which the following is a specification. p 4
This invention relates to improvements in cigarette machines.
rl`he object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cigarette machine which is self contained in the tobacco receptacle or box in which the tobacco is contained and which machine is simple in construction, which makes perfect cigarettes and is so constructed that when the tobacco box is empty the cigarette making attachment can be de tached from the box and easily and readily applied to another box.
In the accompanying. drawings in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures: Figure 1 is a face View of the tobacco box with my cigarette making device applied thereon, the box lid being raised. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the box and cigarette making device thereon, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal elevation of the cigarette making device. Fig. 4 is an end view of the box and the cigarette making device. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail end view of the cigarette making device applied on the box.
In the embodiment of my device as shown the tobacco box 1 is made of metal or pasteboard and has the usual hinged cover 2. In the front wall of the box a slot 4 is formed extending lengthwise of said front for a distance slightly greater than one third of the length of the box, more or less.
The cigarette making device consists of a tube 5 substantially of the length of the box, and is provided with a longitudinal slot indicated at 6 Fig. 3 and extending from a closed end 7 of the tube lengthwise, a distance a trifle longer more or less than the slot 4 in the front of the box. The end 8 of the tube 5 is open. A screw 9 of conveyer or propeller form extending lengthwise of the tube 5 is journaled in the closed end 7 of the tube, the axis 10 of said screw projecting beyond the closed end of the tube and to said projecting end a crank 11 is attached, and has a folding handle piece 12 by means of which the crank can be turned and the conveyer screw rotated axially in the tube. Along the side edges of the slot 6 of the tube outwardly projecting longitudinal ianges 18 are formed which can be passed into or engaged with under-cut Specification ofLetters Patent. Patented D60, 20, 1910, Application filed May 18, 1909. Serial No. 496,731. y
anges 14 formed on the outer surface of the Y frontend wall of the box along the slot 4 for the purpose of holding the tube 5 in place on the box. A sheet of cigarette paper indicated at 15 is passed around the tube 5 to form a paper tube and the outer end of this tube is twisted as shown at 16 over the open end of the tube 5 That part of the tube 5 between its open end and the inner end of the under-cut ianges 14 is adjacent to the outer wall of the box but not in `Contact with it, then permitting passing the paper 15 around the tube 5.
The box 1 is held so that the tube 5 is at the bottom and the tobacco will pass by gravity through the slots 4 and 6 into the tube 5, whereupon the crank 11 is turned and the conveyer screw moves the tobacco lengthwise of the tube 5 and within said tube toward the open end. I/Vhen the tobacco encounters the closed crimped or twisted end of the paper tube 15 and the tobacco accumulates in the paper tube and thecigarette is formed and gradually forces thevpaper tube oil3 the tube 5 until the paper tube is lled and the cigarette completed. Or if desired the tube 5 may be slipped off, the box and the paper rolled or passed around it and crimped or twisted at one end to close the paper tube and then the tube 5 with the paper tube on it is replaced on the box and the cigarette made in the manner described above.
After all the tobacco in the box 1 has been utilized for making cigarettes the tube 5 can be withdrawn from the under-cut flanges 14 and applied upon another box in the same manner. Of course, the slot 4 of the box must be temporarily closed, for example, by a piece of paper or its equivalent, which is removed before the tube 5 is applied.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with av tobacco-box having an opening in one side, of a tube open at one end and closed at the other end and having a smooth interior surface, which tube is held on the outer surface of said box, the tube having an opening in its side adjacent to the closed end of said tube and com` municating by means of said opening and the opening in the side of the box With the interior of the box, a eonveyel screw mounted in said tube and means for turning said conveyer screw, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination With a tobacco box, of a tube having a closed end and an open end and having a longitudinal opening in its side for part of its length adjacent to the closed end ot' the tube7 said tube being detaehably held on the outer surface of said box, a conveyei screw mounted in the tube, means for turning the screw and means at that part of the tube provided With a longitudinal opening for holding the tube on the exterior of the tobacco box, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination With a tobacco box, having a longitudinal opening in one side and under-cut flanges at said opening7 a tube having a closed end and an open end and a slot extending in the direction from the closed end toward the open end of the tube for pai-t of the length of the tube, outwardly extending longitudinal ianges on the tube for engagement with the under-eut flanges of the box, a conveyei screw in the tube and means for turning said Conveyer screw axially, substantiallyl as set forth.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 15th day of Ma7 A. D.
