CIGARETTE-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 21, 1911.
Patentedune4, 1912.
Serial No. 661,471.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN CoHoN, of IVestwood, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful -Improvement in Cigarette-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper boxes for cigarettes or little cigars, of that type com- """"---prising an outer, flattened tubular, openend casing, and an inner slidable and removable container or inner box. A serious defect of boxes of this kind is that after part of their contents has been withdrawn the remainder is free to topple over and move about, so that frequently the cigarettes or the like become bro-ken and unfit for use.
The object of this invention is to provide the inner container of a box of this general character with means for holding the contents in place irrespective of the number of cigarettes that have been removed.
A further object is to enable the same provision to facilitate the removal of the contents.
The invention consists in the structure which will now be briefly described in oonjunction with an illustrative embodiment thereof and which will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention by means of the preferred embodiment thereof: Figure 1 is a front view of the box, with the inner slidable container pushed upward and the closure flap open, the cigarettes or litt-le cigars being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation corresponding to Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front view of the inner container; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section.
The numeral 10 indicates the outer openend casing, and 11 the inner slidable and removable container. These parts may be of any suitable size and proportions, and their form may be varied. The container 11 is shown as comprising a broad back wall 12, narrow side walls 13, a bottom end wall 14, and a broad front wall 15. The walls 14 and 15 preferably constitute a long flap extension of the back wall 12. The front wall 15 may be longer or shorter, according to preference. The container also has a top flap or closure 16, of any usual or suitable form, for permitting the contents of the box to be removed endwise. One or both of the broad walls of the container are provided with portions partly cut out and bent up internally, so as to afford division members 17 and 17a, which separate the interior of the container into individual cigarette compartments. These division walls or tabs are bent up on parallel, longitudinal, approximately equidistant lines. In the best embodiment of the invention each of the front and back walls 15 and 12 is provided with a transverse series of these division members. The two series 17 and 17L are spaced from each other longitudinally of the box, and project in opposite directions into the interior thereof, so as to coperate to form the cigarette 4or cigar compartments. The division members 17 of the front wall 15 are preferably located near the lower end of this wall, while the division members 17a of the back wall are adjacent the closure iiap 16 at the upper end of the box. The openings 18 in the upper part of the back wall 12 of the container left by the bending up of the members 17a facilitate the removal of the cigarettes, when the container is pushed upward and the flap 16 lifted, by reason of the fact that the articles can be grasped between the thumb at one side and a finger at the other side acting through one of these openings 18.
The operation of the invention will be obvious from the foregoing description.
What is claimed as new is:
A cigarette box comprising an outer open-end casing and an inner slidable container having front and back walls, said front and back walls being provided with portions partly cut out and bent up in 0pposite directions in the interior of the container so as to form a transverse series of division members on each wall, said series being spaced longitudinally from each other and cooperating to divide the interior into compartments each of which is adapted to hold a cigarette.
In witness whereof I hereunto sign my name.
.BENJAMIN COI-ION.
