UNITED STATES Patented August 16, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT EDWARD BUCKINGHAM, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR- TO MELVILLE HART, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CIGARETTE-MAKlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,626, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed November 4,1903. Serial No. 179,820. (No modeL) T0 It 1077/0771, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD BUCK- INGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Making Devices, of which the following is a specifi- 1 cation. I
My invention relates to a device which is designed as a magazine for containing tobacco, papers for the manufacture of cigarettes, also matches, and a former, with means for attaching it to the tobacco-containing magazine, said former serving .to receive the paper, which is wrapped around it to form the cylinder, and after this has been done the tobacco from the magazine is delivered directly into the interior of the former. The end of the paper cylinder being then closed, by means of a plunger the tobacco is forcedout of the cylinder into the paper envelop, which is si multaneously forced ofi the former and may then be closed to complete the cigarette.
My invention also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line 0 m, Fig. 1. Fig 3 is a front elevation of my invention with the top or cover lifted and thebox 8 engaging theflanges 10. Fig. i is a top view of same with cover re moved. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line y Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on line 2 .2, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a'transverse section of charging-chamber.
In the manufacture of cigarettes by hand it is common to take a strip of paper of suitable length and width and fill it with loose tobacco, then roll it by the aid of the fingers, and close the overlapping edges and ends, so as to hold the paper in shape to retain the tobacco while it is being smoked.
It is the object of my invention to provide a convenient device for mechanically forming a cigarette and in such a manner that they can always be made of the same size and length.
The invention is also designed to'form a convenient receptacle in which the tobacco, 5 the sheets of paper for the cigarettes, the forming apparatus, and matches can all be conveniently carried in a single receptacle.
As shown in the drawings, A is a box or case of any suitable dimensions. 1 have here shown this case rectangular in shape, somewhat longer than wide and having various compartments formed in it. As herein shown, the case A has a top cover a longitudinal partition extending between its sides, forming a compartment 2 on one side, which contains tobacco, and upon the other side a compartment 3, which is adapted to receive the cigarette-forming device. These compartments do not occupy the full depth of the box or case, and a transverse partition 5 divides the case at right angles with the former division, making a compartment suitable for containing cigarette-papers inline with the compartment which holds the tobacco, and on the same side with the cigarette-papers may be made a compartment, as 6, for containing matches, or, if preferred, the whole of this space may be occupied by the tobacco-compartment, which in some cases will be preferable. The papercontaining compartment is also provided with a suitable hinged cover or door 5.
In order to properly form the cigarettes, I have shown a tube '7 having such diameter that a cigarette-paper may be wrapped around it, and by wetting the overlapping edges they will adhere and form the cylindrical paper envelop. At one end of this tube is formed a box or compartment 8, the central portion of which is made in segmental form approximately coincident with the curvature of the tube, said box being open at one side, as shown at 8. The tube projects from one -side of the compartment and in line with this segmental portion, and a hole is made in the opposite side of the compartment axially in line with the tube.
9 is a plunger adapted to be introduced into the hole and to pass through the tube.
Upon the top of the tobacco-compartment are inturned flanges, as at 10, and these are designed to receive corresponding outwardlyt'urned flanges 11 upon the box or compartment, to which the tube is attached, so that the device may be connected directly with thetobacco-compartment, the open side of the tube-box being presented toward the tobacco compartment.
The paper wrapper having been first folded around the tube, with the end projecting slightly beyond the outer end of the tube, this end of the wrapper is folded down over the tube end, and thus closed. The box is then inverted, so that the tobacco falls into the segmental chamber in line with the tube, and the plunger being reciprocated through the opening on the opposite side will force the loose tobacco into the tube in successive charges until the tube is filled. Then by continuing the pressure upon the plunger it will act through the tobacco contained within the tube and against the closed end of the wrapper to slip the wrapper off the tube, the tobacco being advanced at the same time so as to fill the wrapper, and when the wrapper has been moved from the end of the tube the open end can be closed in the usual manner and the cigarette will be ready for use.
The disposition of the various compartments within the case may be varied, and theconnection of the filling-compartment and tube may also be changed without materially altering the character of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box or case having a tobacco-eompartment and a chamber at one side thereof, are-' movable open-sided receiver normally contained in said side chamber and means whereby it may be fitted to the case with its open side communicating with the tobacco-compartment thereof, and a plunger to operate through said receiver and adapted to discharge the tobacco delivered thereto.
2. The combination with a case having a tobacco-compartment and a chamber at one side thereof, a removable open-sided box and a tubular extension thereof, normally contained in said side chamber, means whereby the box may be fitted to the case with its open side in communication with the tobacco-compartment thereof, and a plunger adapted to reciprocate in the tube to deliver the contents of the box.
3. The combination of a case having a tobacco-compartment and a partition forming a compartment at the side thereof, an opensided receiver having a tubular extension said receiver and extension normally contained in said side compartment, said case and receiver having interlocking flanges whereby the receiver when removed from its normal position may be fitted to the case with its open side in communication with the tobacco-compartment, and said tubular extension serving as a former around which a wrapper may be rolled, and a plunger adapted to be moved through the box and tubular extension thereof to deliver the eontents of the box to the wrapper and to remove the latter from the extension.
a. The combination of a case having flanges along the upper portion of its sides said case having a partition dividing it into compartments one of which is designed to contain tobacco, a box having a segmental cross-section and a tubular extension said box and extension normally and removably contained in the other compartment and said box having an open side and having flanges to interlock with the flanges at the top of the case whereby the box may be secured to the latter with its open side in communication with the tobacco-compartment thereof, and a plunger adapted to operate through the box and the tubular extension thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT EDWARD BUCKINGHAM.
