Description
e. H. BAOKMIRE. Device fo Making Cigarettes. No. 216,817.
Patented June 24,1879.
GEORGE H. BAOKMIRE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MAKING C IGARETTES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,817, dated J nne 24, 1879; application filed April 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H.BACKMTRE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Devices for Making Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification. V
The object of my invention is to construct a a simple and compact device for rapidly making closely -packed cigarettes of uniform length and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cigarette-making device; Figs. 2 and 3, sectional views of the same, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of part of the device.
A is the outer confining-tube, and B the inner tube or former, said tube B being provided, near its upper end, with a funnelshaped reservoir, D, arranged at an angle in respect to the tube, and having a suitable cover, a.
Within the tube B is a plunger, 1), which is somewhat less in diameter than the interior of the tube, and is notched and sharpened at the lower end, so as to present cutting-edges.
The mode of making a cigarette with this device is as follows: The cigarette-paper as is first wrapped around the tube B, as shown in Fig. 1, the paper occupying such a position on the tube that one edge projects slightly beyond the end of the tube. The proper position of the paper on the tube can readily be determined by a gage, d, formed on the latter. When the wrapping is completed the proiecting end of the paper tube is folded down, and the tube B, with its wrapping, then introducedinto the tube A, in which it fits snugly. The receptacle D is then filled with tobacco, the cap a applied, and the plunger 1) reciprocated, the tube B meanwhile being gradually raised, so that the tobacco which passes down around the plunger will be packed by the latter into the paper tube, which remains in the tube A, the latter confining the paper tube and preventing the bursting of the same by the pressure to which it is subjected. During the filling of the cigarette the lower end of the tube A should be closed by the finger or in some other suitable manner.
Owing to the funnel shape of the reservoir D, and to the arrangement of the same at an angle in respect to the tube B, all of the tobacco will pass from the reservoir down through the said tube B, and will be packed into the cigarette, which, when full, is pushed from the tube A, as shown in Fig. 2, and com pleted by twisting the projecting upper end of the paper tube, or the tube A may be used as a holder or mouth-piece for the cigarette, if desired.
The device is self-feeding, so that the plunger b can be rapidly operated, the cap a preventing the shaking of the tobacco out of the reservoir.
The reservoir D is preferably made of such a size that it holds a charge of tobacco sufficient for one cigarette, so that all the cigarettes made with the device will be of uniform length.
The inner end of the plunger is notched and sharpened, so as to form cutting-edges, which will sever lumps in the tobacco and prevent any choking of the tube B or interference with the operation of. the plunger.
The device can be very cheaply manufactured, and is so compact in form that it can be conveniently carried in the pocket.
I am aware thatit is old to use an outer reraining-tube in connection with an inner tube or former, and also that a forming-tube has been heretofore combined with a tobacco-receptacle and a plunger, and these features broadly, therefore, I do not desire to claim; but
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the outer tube, A, the inner tube or former, B, having a funnelshaped reservoir, D, at one side of the tube, and the plunger 1), all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the outer tube, A, the inner tube or former, B, having a funnelshaped reservoir arranged at an acute angle in respect to the tube, and the plunger 1), as specified.
3. The combination of the outer tube, A,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
the inner tube or former, B, having a reservoir, D, at one side of the same, and the plunger 1), less in diameter than the interior of the tube B as specified. V
4. The combination of the tube B, having a BAOKMIRE' reservoir, D, with the plunger 1), havi-n g an Witnesses:
end sharpened so as to form cutting-edges, as J. J. BUGHEY, set forth. I
HARRY SMITH.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
