CIGARETTE FILHNGYDEVICE. APPLICATION FILED APR. 11. 1917.
Patented July 17, 1917.
Ill/I/E/VTOR H15 ATTORNEY rette-Filling Devices,
EDWARD 1-. DELEVANTI, OF NEW YORK, 'N. Y.
CIGARETTE-FILLIN G DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patents.
Patented July I7, 1917.
Application filed April 11, 1917. Serial n6. 161,160.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD P. DELEVANTI,
and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigaof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cigarette filling devices, and has for its main object to provide such a device in combination with and as a part of the ordinary tobacco container, whereby a cigarette wrapper may be readily and conveniently filled with tobacco fed directly from said container.
In carrying my invention into effect, I provide a tobacco container, preferably of the ordinary pocket size, with a discharge nozzle adapted to receive over its outer end one end of a cigarette wrapper, and with a reciprocatoryplunger mounted in position for forcing tobacco from the containerthrough said nozzle and into the cigarette wrapper engaged therewith. Because of the liability of the plunger becoming impeded in its free feeding movements by reason of particles of tobacco becoming lodged between it and the walls of the discharge nozzle, saidplunger is provided with a cutter disk at its front or feeding end and is caused to have a rotary movement during its reciprocation whereby the attached cutter disk will be caused to sever any tobacco that may become lodged between it and the wall of the discharge nozzle and so readily clear a path for the plunger in its feeding movements.
Other features of my invention will be referred to in the detailed description of the invention which follows.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.-v
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tobacco box or container provided with a cigarette filling device embodying my invention;
Fig; 2 is a central vertical section through the same, illustrating the operation of filling a cigarette wrapper connected with the container nozzle. I
Figs. 3 and 4 are details showing, respectively, the cutter at the front end of the plunger and the handle at the rear end of the plunger, together with a portion of the adjacent container.
Fig. is a view of a filled or completed cigarette.
Similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
My improved cigarette filling device may be applied to a tobacco container. of any kind or construction, such for example as the ordinary metal box or leather pouch. In the present case I have shown it as applied to a metal box 2, having a main compartment 34 for containing tobacco, a smaller compartment 4 for containing cigarette wrappers, such as indicated at 5, and a cover 6 for said compartments hinged to the box at 7.
. In a preferred form of my invention, the
filling device comprises a projecting nozzle 8 over which one end of a cigarette wrapper is adapted to be removably placed, and a plunger 9 slidably mounted for movement in a path extending from the container through said nozzle, whereby back and forth or reciprocating movement of the same will coming impeded in its feeding movements by reason of particles of tobacco becoming lodgedbetween it and the walls of the discharge nozzle, as hereinbefore referred to, said plunger is provided with a cutter disk 10 attached to its front end, the peripheral edge of which will. cooperate with the inner wall of the discharge nozzle when forced into the latter and sever any particles of to- I baccothat may become lodged between the same and so act to clear a path for the plunger in its feeding movements. In order to render the cutting action of the cutter disk more effective, means are provided for imparting a rotating movement to the same during the reciprocation of its actuating plunger. Any suitable'means may be employed. for imparting such rotary movement. As here shown, the desired movement is obtained by forming the lun ger with a spiral or screw thread which 1s engaged by a fixed part 11 of the container. Because of the rotary movement of ,the plunger during its reciprocation, it is preferably provided with a handle 12 having a swivel connection therewith, as' shown at 13 in Fig. 2.
After a cigarette wrapper has been filled with tobacco and removed from the nozzle disk, being of such diameter in itsnozzle closing position by any suitable means. As here shown, the plunger handle 13 is provided with a cam or eccentric let.
on itshub portion which is adapted to be turned into engagement with a fixed ledge 15 on the container to frictionally hold the plunger against longitudinal movement.
he paper cigarette wrapper, indicated at 10, will preferably be formed with an open end for location over the container nozzle, as shown in Fig. 2, and with an opposite closed end, for convenience in filling.
After the'wrapper has been filled to a point within a short distance of 1ts open end, it is then withdrawn from connection with the container nozzle, after which the wrapper at its said open end may be twisted to close the same, as shown in Fig. 5.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class specified, comprising a tobacco container having a discharge nozzle adapted to receive over its outer end a cigarette wrapper, a reciprocatory plunger mounted in the container in position for feeding tobacco through the said nozzle and into the cigarette wrapper engaged therewith, and means for imparting a'rotary movement to the plunger during its reciprocation- 2. A- device of the class specified, comprising a tobacco container having a discharge nozzle adapted to receive over its outer end a cigarette wrapper, a reciprocatory plunger mounted in the container in position for feeding tobacco through the said nozzle and into the cigarette wrapper engaged therewith, said plunger carrying a cigarette wrapper,
3. A device of the class specified, com
prising a tobacco container having a dis charge nozzle adapted to receive over its outer end a cigarette wrapper, a reciprocatory plunger mounted in the container in position for feeding tobacco through the said nozzle and into the cigarette wrapper e11- gaged therewith, said plunger carrying a cutter disk at its front end, and means for imparting a rotary movement to said cutter during its reciprocation by the plunger.
4. A device of the class specified, comprising a' tobacco container having a discharge nozzle adapted to receive over its outerend a cigarette wrapper, and a reciprocatory plunger mounted in the container in position for feeding tobacco through the said nozzle and into the cigarette wrapper engaged therewith, said plunger having a screw-threaded connection with a fixed part of the container whereby a rotary movement will be imparted to the plunger during its reciprocation.
5. A devlce of the class specified, comprising a tobacco container having a discharge nozzle adapted to receive over its outer end and a reciprocatory plunger mounted in the container in position for feeding tobacco hrough the said nozzle and into the cigarette wrapperengaged therewith, said plunger carrying a cutter at its front end and having a screwthreaded connection with a fixed part of the container whereby a rotary movement will be imparted to the cutter during the rcciprocation of the plunger.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 7th day of April, A. D. 1917.
