DEVICE FOR MAKING CIGARETTES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,618, dated March 29, 1898. Application filed May 6, 1897. Serial No. 635,315. (No model.)

Be it known that 1, DAVID GEORGE MEINZ,

, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.

Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and usefulDevice for Making Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to make a cigarette from common granulated smokingtobacco and cigarette-paper.

My invention relates to improvements in cigarette-fillers; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a filler that may be easily operated and cheaply constructed; second, one that may be conveniently carried in the pocket. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the complete filler, showing the cigarette paper wrapped around the forming-tube of the filler and twisted at the free end ready to receive the tobacco, the tamping-rod being shown in position for tamping; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the complete filler before the paper is wrapped around the forming-tube of the filler, the tamping-rod being removed from and swung to one side of the forming-tube so as not to interfere with the free introduction of the tobacco into the funnel end of the forming-tube. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tamping-rod detached from the remainder of the device; and Fig. 4 is also a perspective view of the detached tamping-rod, showing a slightly different shaped tamping end from that shown in Fig. 3.

The filler is composed of a forming-tube A, having a funnel-shaped extremity B at one end, and a tamping-rod H,carried by the forming-tube. G is the tamping end of the tamping-rod; F, the handle of the tamping-rod; C, an arm carried by the funnel end of the forming-tube for holding the tamping-rod in the axis of said tube, the rod being adapted to reciprocate up and down in a hole or bearing at E in said arm; D, a hinge for connecting said arm to the funnel end of the forming-tube, so as to admit of the tamping-rod being removed from and swung to one side of the forming-tube when the latter is being filled with tobacco; J, the cigarette-paper wrapped around the forming-tube, and I the twisted end of said paper.

Having thus described my device, I will now explain the process of makinga cigarette by means of it.

Wrap the cigarette-paper J around the tube A, as shown in Fig. 1, allowing it to proj ect beyond the straight end of said tube sufficiently to admit of twisting the paper, as at I in said figure. Next moisten the free edge of the paper and press it down upon the rolled portion, so that the paper will not unroll. Then twist the projecting end of the paper, as at I, to prevent the tobacco from falling through the open end of the tube at I.

Next turn the cigarette-filler funnel end down,

so as to allow the tamping-rod to fall out of the formingtube. Then reverse and the forming-tube will be ready to receive the charge of tobacco. After filling the formingtube with tobacco by pouring it into the funnel B hold twisted end of the paper firmly against straight end of forming-tube and proceed to tamp the tobacco by means of the tamping rod H. Then cease to hold the twisted end of the cigarette-paper and press the tobacco through the tube A with the tamping-rod H, when the paper will follow and slip from the tube as the tobacco is forced through it and into the rolled cigarette-paper'J. Now twist the other end of the rolled paper and the cigarette is complete.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a manual cigarette-filler, the combination of a cylindrical forming-tube, approximately corresponding in diameter and length to that of a cigarette to be formed therein and adapted to receive a supply of tobacco upon the inside and a wrapping of cigarette-paper upon the outside, and a funnel-shaped hop per at one end of said tube and adapted to receive the required charge of tobacco and direct the same into said tube, with a tampingrod having an enlarged tamping end approximately fitting the inside diameter of said tube, the said rod being carried by said hopper and journaled in the longitudinal axis of said hopper and adapted to move to and fro in the direction of said axis.

2. A manual cigarette-filler consisting of a cylindrical forming-tube approximately corresponding in diameter and length to that of a cigarette to be formed therein, and adapted to receive a supply of tobacco upon the in side and a Wrapping of cigarette-paper on the outside, and a funnel-shaped hopper at one end of said tube and adapted to receive the required charge of tobacco and direct the same into said tube, and a tamping-rod attached to said hopper and provided with a nation of a hopper, consisting of a cylindrical portion'A and a funnel-shaped extremity B, a reciprocating tamping-rod H and a supporting-arm 0 attached to said hopper and adapted to carry said rod and confine its reciprocal movements to the longitudinal axis of said hopper,

5. In a manual cigarette-filler, the combination of a hopper, provided with a cylindrical portion A and a funnel-shaped portion I B, a supporting-arm 0 attached to said hop 2 per and carrying a tamping-rod, and a tamping-rod II, provided With a cone-shaped exitremity with a bearing, E in which said tamping-rod reciprocates. v
