To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Pnrnnson H. CHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Cigarette-Machine, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a machine for forming and fillin cigarettes and it is particularly adapted or filling cigarettes with. material such as medicinal agents which may present considerable adhesive quality when subjected topressure such quality interferin with the operation of the usual machines employed for cigarette manufacture. The machine, however, is adaptable to tobacco or other fillers. 7

The main object of the invention is to provide a cigarette machine which is simple and cheap m construction and rapid and eflicient in operation. 7

Another object of the invention is to provide a cigarette machine which does not require any large outlay for a plant or for operatives.

A further object of the invention is to provide a machine which will enable a person to perform the successive operations of rolling the wrapper, inserting the filler, and discharging the cigarette from the machine, quickly and conveniently.

Otherobjects of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the cigarette forming case, and support for said case and for the filler, showing the forming and ifilling tube in position therein. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, showing the engagement with the wrapper of the means for retainin the samein the case while the forming tu e is being withdrawn. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of. the machine, showing the tube in position for filling,.and the tamping device in operation. Figs 9 is a section on line e -m Fig. 5. v a; Tillie machine is supported .on any suitable" base 1 formed, for example, with side portions 2 for resting on a table or other support to support the base 1 in an inclined position. Said base 1 is rovided with a slot 3 extending from the ront ortion of said top to the center portion t ereof and enlarged at the central portion to form an opening l. The walls of the slot 3 are beve ed as shown at 3. A semi-circular seat or notch 7 is formed in the base bat the forward end of said slot 3. Rearw'ardly of the opening 4 there is secured to the base 1 a case 5 which is tubular and of dimensions to fit and form the tubular wrapper of the cigarette, said case being secured to the base 1 y any suitable means, for example by staples 6. A movable closure is provided for the lower'rear end of said case consisting of a plate 8 pivoted to the base 1 and adapted to swing u against the rear end of the case 5 to close 1; e same, saidplate being provided at its upper end with a hook 10 adapted to-snap over a projection '11 on the case to hold the said plate in closed position. A detent or stop -means consisting-of a'bar 12 is secured to the base 1 and'extends obliquely inward and rearward toward the case 5 its rear end being beveled and being directly adjacent to the forward end of the case 5 at one side'thereof. A similar bar 13 is ivoted at 13' to the base 1 and is provi ed with a beveled end also extending adjac'ent to the forward end ofthe case 5. The forward upper end of the case 5 extends partly over the opening "4.

A forming and filling'tube 14"is provided of a diameter corresponding *to the internal diameter ofthe cigarette tuba-said tube 14- having an annular collar or shoulder 15 thereon atsuch distance from one end of the tube that when the cigarette paper is rolled on the tube, with one end in contact withsaid shoulder, the paper will extend at its other end somewhat beyond the end of the tube. Said tube is rovided in another portion thereof with a ongitlflinal slot or opening 16 for entry of the filler thereinto and is provided with a ta ereol end ortion or nozzle 17 communicatmg with t e slotted portion-of the-tube sot/hat the'liller may be ischarged throu h said nozzle into the cigarette. Ashou de'r or collar'1'8 is formed ,on the tube adjacent to said nozzle, for the purposes hereinafter set forth. The operation is as follows: A sheet of cigarette pa er, indicated at 23, is applied to a cylindrica portion 24 of the tube 14 and rolled thereon, said paper abutting at one end against the collar 15 on said tube and tube. The tube or member 14, with the tubular cigarette wrapper thereon, is then inserted within the case 5, said case being of such size as to fit closely thereon. The closure member 8 is then swung up to closed position against the rear end of the case 5 and pushes the tube 14 with the paper wrapper, so as to move it a small distance, and the bar 13 is then caused to engage with the paper wrapper 23 either by manual operation or by other means so as to retain the tubular cigarette wrapper within the case 5, and while the said wrapper is thus held the tube 14 is withdrawn from within said wrapper and from the case 5 and is then reversed or turned end to end, and its other end or nozzle 17 is insorted into the open end of the wrapper 23, as shown in Fig. 7, said tube being in such position that its opening or slot- 16 faces upwardly. The collar or shoulder. 18 enga es in this position of the parts with the en ofthe wrapper, and the other collar 15 engages with the front of the base 1 to aid in setting the tube 14. in proper position. The filler, indicated at 25, is then poured or placed on the base 1 over the opening 4 and slot 3 and over the tube 14, a portion of said filler falling through theslot 16 into the interior of said tube 14, so that when the tamper 20 is inserted and pushed downwardly within said tube 14 it drives a por tion of said fillerinto the tubular wrapper 23 the feeding operation being aided by gravity on account of the rearward slope of the base and of the case 5. By repeated longitudinal reciprocating motions of the tamper, the filler is thus pushed and packed or tamped into the wra per, thefiller being pushed over on top of t etube 14 from time to time, as may be required, and the tamping operation be' .repeated untilthe wrapper is sufficiently 1.: The closui'e plate 8 is then released and swim down out of the way and the cigarette is then ejected by pushing the same out of the case by means i of the tamper rod 20. The slot 3 and opening 4 permit the filler to fall through the base so as to keep the space clear in front of the case 5.

What I claim is 1. A cigarette forming and filling machine comprising a base, a tubular .case thereon, said case being open at both ends. a movable closure for closing one end of said case, said base being provided with an opening adjacent the other end of said case and with a slot extending forwardly from said openin a tubular member provided at one end wit a paper holder adapted to receive and support a paper wrapper rolled thereonto and insertible with said pa or into said case, and said member provided with an opening communicating with the interior of the tubular member, and tam in means insertible and slidable within said tu ular member the slot in said base having downwardly converging side walls extending at each side of the tubular member when the latter is in place and said opening in the base extending below the adjacent end of the tubular case to allow the filler to pass through said slot and opening and prevent clogging in-the tamping operation.

2. In a cigarette machine, a base, a case mounted thereon adapted to receive and fit a paper wrapper, said case being open at both ends, a member hinged on said base and adapted to close said case at one end, a tubular member provided with a paper holder portion adapted for rolling the paper thereonto and for insertion with the paper into said case, and detent means consistlng of arms mounted on said base and extending obliquely forward and inward toward the case an provided at their inner ends with means adapted to engage the paper when inserted in the case toretain the same in the case when the said tubular member is withdrawn from within the paper one of said arms being pivotally mounted on the base, and having a handle-portion for pressirfg'said pivoted arm toward the case.

3. In a cigarette machine, a base, a case mounted thereon and provided with closure means at one end and open at the other end, said base and the case thereon being inclined downwardly toward the closure end of the case and said case being adapted to fit and receive a tubular paper" rapper, the tubular member hav' a soul? at one and adapted to enter the tu ular paper wrapper in the case and having an opening for supplying filler to said nozzle, and tamping means movable within said tubular member to force the filler from said opening into the paper in the case.

detent means for holding said closure means in closed position the other end of the case being open, said base and the case thereon being inclined downwardly toward the closure end of the case and said case being adapted to fit and receive a tubular paper wrapper, a tubular member provided with a paper holder portion adapted for rolling the paper wrapper theregnto and for insertion with the paper wrapper into said case and rovided with shoulder means for determining the position of the paper wrapper, said tubular member having at its upper end a nozzle adapted to enter the tubular paper wrapper when inserted in the case, and said other end of the tubular member having an opening for supplying filler to said nozzle, detent means mounted on the base and adapted to engage the aper wra per when in osition on the nozz e and wit in the tubu ar case, and tamping means movable within said tubular member to force the filler from said opening into the pa er in the case.
