VESSEL-FILLING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 14, 1920. Serial No. 358,675.

Be it known that I, THEoDonUs S. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of' Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vessel- Filling Apparatus, of which the 'following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that type of device more particularly illustrated in my Patent No. 1,337,743, granted April 20, 1920, and the particular improvement ot the present invention is the provision of means for reception within'tli'e troughed body Vto facilitate the removal ot the contentsY thereof and the retaining of the same within a vessel on the withdrawal of the body from within the vessel.
A further object is to provide a construction which provides a substantial closure for the end or opening of the vessel through which the troughed member is inserted and removed. A still further object is to provide a device for. cooperation with the troughed iodyavhereby during one operation thereof the material in the body is shaped to conu form or carry out the symmetrical configuration thereof, and during another opera-tion the same assists in depositing the shaped or formed material within the vessel, and at both times protects the hand ot' the operator from becoming soiled by the material handled.
lith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing anyof the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a` longitudinal sectional View of a conventional form of grease gun illustrating my invention in operative use in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the preferred embodiment of my invention in use on a filling device.
Fig. 3 is a view in'plan ot' the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 indicates the handle and v2 the troughed body of one embodiment of a vessel filling device, as set forth in my Patent April 20th, 199.0.
To shape the material contained wit-hin the ltroughed body 2 to form the. same in a symmetrical configuration as illustrated in dotted lines 3, Fig. 2 of the drawings, i employ a ferrule el of an inside diameter corresponding to that of thereXterior diameter ot' the troughed body 2. The ferrule is preferably formed with'an annular body .5 and a beveled flange 6 disposed angularly ot one end thereof, and tromthe terminus of the flange 6 extends a handle ordisplacing member 7 the end 8 of which is preferably formed to correspond with the interior ofthe troughed ybody 2, and said handle or ldisplacing member T is preferably ot' a width at least equal to that of the troughed body 2 so that on said handle or displacing member be-r ing disposed transversely of the troughed member 2 with its free end 8 seated within l the troughed member, the contents of the troughed member in advance of the handle or displacing member T will be provided with an abutment byl said member 7.
In use it is preferable thaty the shaping member et be positioned on the troughed member 2 adjacent the handlel, after which time the trough is filled to its capacity with material which projects above the longitudinal side edges of' the trough a considerable distance. Y l

This being done, the troughed body with its contained andshaped material is inserted into the vessel 9, illustrated in Fig. 1 as a grease gun, after the y plunger 10 thereof has been fully retracted. Theoperator after shaping the material by withdrawing the shaping member 4 from the end of the'troughed member 2, positions the displacing handle member 7 thereof transversely over the open end of the vessel 9, substantially closing the end thereof, and With its curved or rounded terminal end ti Aseated Within the base of the channeledmember 2 to form the abutment for retaining the material Within the vessel 9, WithdraWs the troughed body 2 from Withinthe vessel causing the material held Within the vessel by the displacing handle member T to be retained Within the vessel due to being held therein when the troughed bod y member 2 is Withdrawn therefrom.
lt is to be understood that the configuration of the troughed member, shaping memberv and displacing handle may be constructed in any suitable manner and of any desired number of parts, just so lon@l as the shaping member is capable of forming the material contained Within the channeled member above the side edges thereof to conform or carry out the full contour oi the troughed member, and the'displacing handle member is of such conliguration as to be capable of positioning Within the troughed member and to close or substantially close the open end or the vessel during the Withdrawal of the troughed member therefrom.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it Will be observed that the shaping and displacing member is preferably formed from a singley piece of material suchas a llat plate havingan enlarged portion at one end which is perforated preferably by a drawing action to provide a Walled aperture forming the shaping` opening. Y
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. In combination with an elongated troughed body open at one end for receiving a. body of plastic material, a shaping mel ber provided With an edge formed to coperate with the troughed body and capable of movement longitudinally thereof for shaping the plastic material received therein to substantially complete the symmetrical contour of the troughed body, and a member extended from said shaping member and adapted for disposing transversely of the -troughed body with its free end seated Within the troughed body to displace the contents of the trough on the longitudinal movement of the trough or member relatively to each other.
2. A shaping and displacing member for the described purpose, the same comprising a member provided With a shaping aperture and a solid displacing member extended therefrom, the free end ot Which is shaped to substantially conform to the interior configuration or' the shaping aperture. Y

Aishaping and displacing member 'or the described purpose, the same comprising a relatively flat plate formed at one end With an enlargement, said enlargement being provided With an aperture extending therethrough and of an interior diameter approximately equal to the Width of said plate, the terminal end of said plate conforming substantially to the. interior configuration of said aperture.
6. A shaping and displacing member ior the described purpose, the same comprising a member provided with a shaping portion and a solid displacing member extended therefrom, the free end ot' which is shaped to substantially conform to the interior configuration of the shaping portion,
