T. S. BAILEY.
VESSEL FILLING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED NOV.26, 1918.

WITNESS:
THEODORUS S. BAILEY, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
VESSEL-FILLENG DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed November 26, 1918. Serial No. 264,223.
To (ZZZ "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ti-inononus S. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing .at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vessel- Filling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is designed primarily for the filling of receptacles with plastic or semi-plastic material and is designed to provide a means whereby arecep taclc may be filled to its capacity with the material desired and without leaving air pockets or unfilled portions within the material deposited within the receptacle.
The invention is particularly designed for the filling of grease guns or other elongated tulmlar receptacles with grease or like material and by the use of which the gun. may be filled quic ly and easily and dispenses with the use of spoons, spatula and paddles now employed. for the placing of successive charges of material at the open end of the gun and forcing successive charges down the barrel of the same, which is an exceedingly tedious and slow opera- 7 tion, during which the surface of the gun becomes soiled, as do the hands of the operator.
The invention consists primarily in a body member substantially U -shaped in cross section, the diameter of which is approximately the same as that of the gun to be filled and which is adapted for receiving to its full capacity material, the upper surface of which is removed to complete the uniform cross sectional conformation of the material, and which is inserted as a charge into the gun and retained therein in any suitable manner.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention,
reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a longitudinal broken sectional view of a tubular member representgrease gun and with the preferred embodiment of my invention received therein,
a charge of material being indicated as held in the device.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective, illustratmore fully the operation of the material shap'mg or conforming ferrule or ring.
Fig. 8 is a view in elevation of the ferrule with portion of its wall broken away.
F i is a view in perspective of a modified form of the body member.
Referring more par icularly to the several views of the drawings, wherein like ciaracters of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 indicates a suitable body member any suitable cross sectional configuration, the preferred form illustrated being U-shaped, and the same is constructed of any suitable stiff or rigid material and may be made in different sizes to conform with the interior diameter of the receptacles to be filled. The body member 1 is provided at one end with a suitable handle or gripping member 2, the base 3 of which completes the conformation of this end of the body member and provides a closure for the same.
Slidably mounted longitudinally of the body member 1 is a suitable ferrule 4 having a base 5 and an outwardly projecting flange 6 extended from one edge thereof, said flange being preferably curved, as at -Fig. 3 of the drawings. As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the base 5 of the ferrule, when the same is in position on the body member 1, is adapted to contact with and conform to the outer surface of the body member 1 and completes the configuration of the same, and when said ferrule is forced outwardly longitudinally of said body member the flange 6 is disposed toward the outer end of the member 1. hen in use, the ferrule 4 is preferably held at the inner end of the body member 1 adjacent the base 3 of the handle 2, and with a suitable implem nt the recess 8 of the body member 1 is completely filled with the semi-plastic material, the upper surface of which extends above the upper side edges of the body member 1.
After the member 1 is filled to its capacity, the operator grasps the handle 2 in one hand and with the other grasps the ferrule 4 and forces the same longitudinally of the body member 1, keeping the flange 5 in contact with the outer surface of the member 1. This operation shapes the material to complete the conformation or approximate conformation of the body member 1 and removes excess material over the quantity required from the body member, and in so doing the beveled face of the flange 7 causes said material, as being shaped and removed, to be forced toward the recess 8 of the body mem her, and thus be tightly packed therein.
The body member with the material held within the groove 8 thereof is now inserted into the open end 9 of the tubular receptacle or gun10, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the operator to insure the retaining of the charge Within the gun, places his finger or a suitable implement over the open end of 9 of the gun and into the groove 8 adjacent the closed end of the body member 1, and at the same time withdraws the implement from within the gun, which action withdraws or slides the implement from beneath the charge held thereby, permitting the charge to remain in the gun and fill the same to its capacity, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
If desirable, in filling the implement, the same may be inserted into a vessel of semiplastic material and thence rotated 011 its longitudinal axis, cutting from the material a charge thereof completely filling the groove 8 and completing the conformation of the body member 1, which charge adheres to the groove in the body member 1 and is withdrawn from the material in the vessel on the withdrawing of the implement therefrom.
l Vhen the body member 1 is filled in this manner, little use is required of the ferrule 42; however, the same may be moved l0ng1 V tudinally of the body member, as previously described, to insure the complete conformation of the material to correspond with that of the body member 1.
The modified construction illustrated in Fig. 4 consists of a body member 11 which 7 is polygonal in cross section; this form illustrating a variation from the form in the preferred embodiment of the invention, and if this modified construction is employed, the ferrule to be used therewith will also be of a corresponding cross section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 7 LA device for filling a tubular recep tacle with plastic material, comprising an elongated body member of relatively stiff material for insertion thereinto to the full depth of said receptacle, said body member formed in one face with a longitudinally disposed material receiving groove open at one end of said body member, said member provided at one end with a handle for closing the opposite end of said groove, and a ferrule slidable longitudinally of said body member for shaping the material received for filling with plastic material said depression being closed at its opposite end by said handle, and a ferrule slid-able longitudinally of said body member, said ferrule adapted when moved longitudinally of said body member to remove the excess material from said depression and to form the remaining material to complete the cross sec- 5 tion of said body member.
3. A device for filling tubular receptacles with plasticmaterial comprising an elongated rigid troughed body member, the trough thereof opening for the full length of one side of said member and at one end' of said member, a handle for closing the opposite end of said trough, and a member surrounding said trough body and capable of vmovement longitudinally thereof for shaping the plastic material received there in to a substantially cylindrical cross section.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THEODOR-US S. BAILEY.
