To-(ZZZ whomitmdycondem: :Be it knownthdt I, GnEEso'N Bowman 303- i 1Ns0N, a subject of His Majesty the Knight Great Britain, and a. resident of Esher, 1n the county of Surrey, England, have :mvented a certain new and useful Combined llobucco Receptaole end Pipe Filler, of which the ienewing is a. -specification.
- The inverition has reference to mechanism: for filling pipeswith tobacco, a'nd has for its object to combine with such mechanism a; receptacle adapted to ontain the tobacco, and to adnp't the receptacle and the said filling mechanism so that the tobacco can be. most easily transferred from the receptacle; to the pipe. i It has been customary -hitherto for the tobacco to be contained in cylinders cons'tructed of paper or other suitable material, each of which is adapted to contain a measured quantity e f tobacco sufiicient to fill "a pipe, on the well-known principle of a cartridge. These cartridges ere sup lied in a: case, from which they have heretofore been transferred "one at a time a's required to a metal cylinderfitted with n plunger, and so constructed that operating the plunger the tobacco can be driven into the bowl of the pipe 'While the cartridge 'case is retalined in the metal cylinder bymeans of projections et the low'ver end thereof which engage with the cartridge case and prevent it being ejected with the tobacco.
This invention comprises in one structure a tobacco pipe filler and a receptacle or magazine for containing a supoly of tobacco "cartridges, "the devic being so constructed of a receptacle *forfthe cartridges and a "handle for the filler. I
Figure 1 is e ipla-n'view of'one embodiment "of the invention showing the case and the lidfopen, the plung'e'r with *its cylinder having been removed. Fig.-2 is a -p'ltin view the plunger oyli'nder end plunger. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the plunger cylinder, the section being taken 7 on the line of 2, andlooking in the direction of thefa'nrmv a. Fig. 4 is a lplan View of the cylinder end of the case showing e-cha rgeof ".toblicco driven a mart ofthe Way into a pipe 'hy the plunger. -5 is e plan view showing-the case closed und' the lid secured by the plunger cylinder. r I
A is iihefcflse, necepta'cle or magazine for that the magazine serves the doublepurip ose v; the storage of tobacco oertridgcs used for successive fillings of a tobacco pipe." llh-is magazine is prefembky divided longitudinally-by a partition I) end is provided with a closing lid B which ispreferably-'hinged'to the magazine at-one end thereof. 7 I C is a filler hem-e1 constituting -'a part of =the filler. This barrel is preferably oylins drical in form open at both ends and 'adalpted to receive the tobacco cartridge from which 'the' tobacco is to be ejected or expelled into the pipe. It is provided with means for holding the casing otthe estrtridge while the tobacco is being "expelled therefrom. The barrel C. is preferably constructed in seperable sections, a -S8ml*C 'yliIl I 'drical section@ and '-a=semi cylindricel sec-' tion 0C The-section'o is'fixed to'or integral with the'outer ended the body of the imagezine A and the-section '0 is fixed to or integral with the outer-end of the lid 13 and extends about half wey' aoro$ saaid'en'd. A tubular guide d "forms ,a cylindrical 'extension of the barrel G and serves as -a guide for the :plunger cylinder E hereafter mentioned. The means QI-hOldlIlg"0r retaining the cert-rid,, ze case within the filler barrel are preferably in the form of roughened -surit'eees having a considerable areaextending both longitudinelhy and 'oircumfe'rentieglly on the -inner face of the barrel. This construction affords a secure .=grip.'of the cartridge case and not only holds the same Within the barrel during the expulsion of the tobacco but iprevents; crinkling thereof.
The edge vof -the --'magazine is preferably provided with-a wide or lippg over which the lid-shuts, said guide lip serving -to hold the lid when in closedwposition in its IPI'QPGI relative position to said case.
A pluflgeno'f any suitable formyis adapted to pass*thlroughthe'filler barrel-a nd through the cartridge case therein for pilshing 'outaor expelling the tobacco eonta ined' Within said case into the pipe which covers the outerend of said filler barrel. In the 'fdrm 'of embodiment herein shown the :plunger secured within a rplunger -cylinder E,rthe shank e of the plunger being 'fixed to the closed end of said plunger cylinder. This plunger cylinder is open at its inner end and is adapted to fit and slidvover the fillerban rel C and it is provided with a longitudinal slot 7 whidh'engages the meeting webs 'k' and'l which unite 'the sections-of said filler 116 barrel with the body and lid respectively of the magazine when the plunger is inserted into the barrel. When the plunger cylinder E is pushed into the cylinder it lies along 5 the outer end of the magazine and serves as a fastening device to secure the lid in'closed position. I
To fill a pi e with tobacco the plunger cylinder is wlt drawn sufiiciently to clear it from the half 0' but it may conveniently still remain, if desired, upon the cylindrical portion (1. The lid B can then be opened and a cartridge removed and placed in the half cylinder 0, after removing the empty case, if such has been left therein, of the cartridge used on the last previous occasion. The lid is then closed, when the half 0' comes into position over the half 4 and the cartridge is gripped between the roughened surfaces. The pipe is then held with the open bowl opposite the left hand end of the cylinder C (as shown in Fig. 4) and the plunger cylinder pressed toward the 'pipe bowl, when the to acco is forced into the pipe bowl out of the cartridge case, the latter remaining in the cylinder. It will be seen that as soon as the pipe is filled the case is securely closed and is in a suitable condi tion to be returned to the users pocket without any further manipulation.
There is an advantage merely in carrying thefiller attached to a case, but the invention also constitutes an improved filler by which a pipe is more readily charged than properly central with the pipe bowl while filling. This difiiculty has hitherto been, to some extent, met by forming the end of the cylinder with a crown of a taper form slightly to enter the pipe bowl and prevent the cylinder being pushed too far therein. In such construction the inside of the cylinder must be of less diameter than the top of the bowl of the pipe. By combining the filler and case, a very convenient handle is provided by which the filler can be held firmly in position, and the case itself may form a stop against which to rest the bowl of the pipe. Furthermore the case forms a handle by which to hold the filler while the cartrid e is being transferred from the case to the ller.
