Be it known thatI, CHARLES E. HorKINSy a citizen oi the United States, residlngat lVashington, in the `District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Makers, of which the following is a specification. i 1" i 1 This invention has reference to a cigarette making device, and has `for its primary lob.- ject to produce a simple, `cheap andthoroughly effective means wherebytobacco may be elcctivcly packed 1n a paper cartridge or casing to produce a cigarette. l.

A iurther ob]ect of the invention `is to produce a cigarette making device in which the parts constituting the same may be caged one within the other and inclosed `by a` suitf able detachable cap, when the device is not in use, so that the same may be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user.`

It is a further object of the invention4 to produce a construction and arrangement of parts wherein one end of a cigarette formed in the barrel after a cigarette paper has been wound around the saidtube, the edges thereof pastedtogether and the lower end crimped or bent inwardly over the inner edge of the packing tube, the saidpacking 1 tube having its `outer end lormed` with a 5 flared receiving member; yto arrange in the packing tube a packing member in the nature of a plunger which extends through the opening in thebarrel, andfto provideg means for lockingthe tubeinthe` barrel so` that the said tube willbe held ,againstfmove-L ment when the packingmember isfrecipro-` cated to draw and pack tobacco inthe tube, and so that the paper cartridge can not be-j,

Referring novvftol the drawings in1k detail, the numeral `10 designates the outer.mem ber of the improvement which isf in the natureof a' cross `sectionally round tbe or barrel. The barrel is of an equalcross sectional diameterthroughoutland `has one of its ends closed as at 11.` The closed endV is approximately centrally formed with a rectangular opening` 12, and to the opposite sides of this opening, at diagonally opposite ends ofthe slot 16; On the barrel 10 is a pin 19.f This pin is designed to be received in the slot 16 When the sleeve 14C is moved longitudinally of the barrel in either direction. Vhen the sleeve is moved outward of the barrel and partly turned on the barrel the pin is received in the passage 1-7A of the slot 16. When the Vsleeve is `moved inward on the barrel and partly turned the pin isreceived inl the assage 18'of the slot 16.

The packing ltu e is indicated by the nuinera'l 2.0.` andl is' of a greater length than the barrel 10. The outer end of the packing -tube is flared as at 21, and this liared por-` tion provides the mouthjof thel tube. The ared mouth has an outwardly extending' pin 22 designed. to receive the slot 16 of the sleeve 14 and the outer passage 19 of the said slot, when the` sleeve is turned on both the.` barrel and tube to lock the tube in the barrel. This is an important feature o-f the invention as Wil-l. be presently apparent.

The tobacco` packing member comprises a cross sectionally rectangular rod 23 Which` isA of a greater length than the tube and barrel; The rodV isy of a sizeto snugly pass' through the opening `12 inthe barrel, an'd the said rod: has its outer endl provided with a head 24. 'lhe rod, at a suitable distance from its outer end has its edges provided with' oppositely disposed notches 25, the purpose of Which Will presently be set forth.

17 and 18 in the slot 16 thereof are brought opposite the pins on the barrel and tube. The sleeve is partly turned `to bringthese` pins inthe said passages, thus locking the V125 tube in the barrel and tightly compressing the bent or inturned` end of the cartridge between the inner end of the tube and the closed end of the barrel.v The packing or plunger rod 23 is passed through the pack- 130 ing "tube and the "closed endof thebarreli. The reciprocation of the member 23 through the tube and barrel permits of the notches 25 in the rod thereofacting upon the tobacco to compress the same toward the bottom of the" cartridge, and whenthe head 24: is brought against the tobacco andcompresses thesame sufficiently the notches 25 will `bearranged opposite the walls of the opening 12 inthe closed end of the barrel. ,Thcrod is Anow given a half turn sothatthe Vsides thereoi will contact wththe lugs 13. The locking 1 sleeve 14 is moved to` unlocking position on the barrel 10 with respect to the Jtube 20. The tube 20 is turned in the same direction as was the rod 23 to loosenthe saine and to permit the withdrawal of the said tube from the cartridge 26. The packing member or plunger is then turned so that the rod may tbe withdrawn through the opening in the closed end of the barrel, and through the tobacco in the cartridge. The rod is comparatively thin and the packed tobacco in the cartridge readily fills the space previously occupied by the said rod. In this manner a perfectly formed cigarette is easily and quickly produced. The end of the cigarette projects a suitable distance through the open end or mouth of the barrel and this end may be readily grasped to remove the cigarette from the barrel.

When the device is not required for use the tube is arranged in the barrel and the packing member or plunger is arranged in the tube. The plunger member is turned end for end, that is, the head thereof rests on the closed end of the barrel. A tubular cap 28 is inserted over the open end of the barrel and is brought to frictional engagement with the locking sleeve, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3 ot the drawings.

It is believed, Yfrom the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, that the simplicity of the con struction and the advantages thereof will be apparent without further detailed deV scription.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. In a cigarette forming device, a barrel having a closed end provided with an opening, a packing tube in the barrel designed to have arranged therearound a papel` can tridge one end Vof which being bent inward over the end of the packing tube, means for locking the packing tube to the bairel, a rod arranged centrally through the packing tube and passing through the closed end of the and means for `locking the rod to the barrel when the head thereof has been broughtinto the `tube a predetermined distance.

4t. A cigarette forming device including a barrel having one of its ends closed and its said closed end provided with an opening, a packing tube in the barrel designed to have arranged. therearound a paper cartridge one end of which being bent over the inner end ot the packing tube. a rod arranged centrally through the packing tube and passing through the opening in vthe barrel and designed to be reciprocated in the barrel, said rod having its outer end headed, and means for locking the rod to the barrel when the head thereof has been brought into the packing tube a predetermined distance.

5. A cigarette forming device comprising a barrel, said barrel having a closed end provided with an opening, diagonally disposed lugs on the outer face of said closed end arranged at the opposite sides of the opening, a packing tube in the barrelhaving one end projecting through the mouth of?V y the barrel and` its other end'` resting onV the ing in the closed endof the barrel, said rod having its edges provided `with oppositely` disposed notches whereby the rod may be turned when the notches are brought opposite the side walls of the opening to permit of the said rod contacting `with the mentioned lugs, as and for the purpose set` forth.

6.
