UNTTED gTATfig PATENT UFFTQE.
FRANZ KETTMANN, OF SALEM, OHIO.
CIGARETTE-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANZ KETTMANN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Machines, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention is a pocket implement for the manufacture of cigarettes, and it has for its object to provide a device of this kind by the use of which a cigarette can be quickly and easily made, and also to provide a device which is simple in construction so that it can be easily and cheaply manufactured.
lVith these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device open and ready for use. Figs. 3 and at are sections on the lines 33 and H,"
respectively, of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a cylindrical tube which is open at one end and closed at its other end. In the tube is slidably mounted, so that it may be projected therefrom, a holder for the tobacco and paper of which. the cigarette is made. This holder comprises a cylindrical tube consisting of two longitudinal sections 6 and 7, respectively, connected by a hinge joint 8, so that said sections may be swung open and thereby facilitate the insertion of the tobacco. The tube 5 also contains a stationary plunger for pushing the tobacco from the holder into the paper tube, as will be presently described. The plunger comprises a stem 9 having, adjacent to the open end of the tube 5, a head 10, and the other end of the stem is secured by a screw 11 in an aperture 12 made in the closed end of the tube. The plunger stem extends lengthwise through the tube 5 and is spaced therefrom a sufficient distance to accommodate the holder.
The section 6 of the holder has a short tubular extension 13 at its inner end containing a stop l3 which engages the plunger Specification of Letters Patent.

head at the end of the outward movement of the holder. The plunger head has an external longitudinal groove 14 to accommodate the knuckles of the hinge joint 8. The extension 13 and stop 13 are provided with a threaded aperture to receive a screw 15 which passes through a longitudinal slot 16 in the tube '5, said screw being provided to afford convenient means for operating the holder.
In operation, the holder is slid out of the tube 5 and opened to receive the tobacco, after which it is closed. By providing the holder with two hinged sections the tobacco can be readily inserted, and it can also be packed as tightly as desired. The tobacco having been placed in the holder, and the latter closed, the paper is wrapped around the outside of the holder to form a tube, one end of the paper being moistened as usual-t0 hold the paper in tubular form when it is slipped off the holder. The holder is now drawn back into the tube 5, whereupon the paper tube is stripped ofi". The tobacco is pushed gradually out of the holder into the paper tube by the plunger head as the holder is retracted, and when the holder is entirely Withdrawn the cigarette is released in complete form from the holder. The holder and the part 13 thereof entirely close up the space between the plunger head and the tube 5 and thus prevent the paper from being drawn into the latter when the holder is retracted.
I claim:
1. A cigarette making device comprising a tube open at one of its ends and closed at its other end, a stationary plunger in the tube adjacent to the open end thereof, said plunger having a stem extending lengthwise through the tube and secured to the closed end thereof, and a tobacco and paper holder comprising a tubular member which is slidable into and out of the tube, the plunger being located inside the holder and the tube and holder being of substantially the same length to permit the entire holder to be retracted into the tube.
2. A cigarette making device comprising a longitudinally slotted tube open at one of its ends, a stationary plunger in the tube adjacent to the open end thereof, a tobacco and paper holder comprising a tubular member slidable into and out of the tube, the length to permit the entire holder to be re plunger being located in the holder, and tract/ed into the tube. 10 said holder consisting of longitudinal sec- In testimony whereof I atfiX my signature tions hinged together, one of the sections in presence of two Witnesses.
