TOBACCO CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 20, I913.

TOBACCO-CONTAINER.
Lid-9155.
Application filed March 20, 1913.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ISAAC J. MARCUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in tobacco containers and it consists in the novel parts and devices and combination thereof herein set forth and made the subject matter of claim.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification Figure 1 is a vertical section of the improved container; Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the in side sliding cover; Fig. 3 a vertical section of the container and a side view of the cover illustrating the manner of inserting the latter.
This container is made of sheet metal and in the form of a cylindric can or vessel provided with an outside fitting slip cover the flange of which may set down against a bead or shoulder formed in thebody of the vessel near its top. Inside of the vessel is a second cover which is shown made in a dome shape and which has at its lower edge a vertical flange adapted to fit the interior surface of the walls of the vessel and to slide snugly up and down. This construction enables a moistening sponge or pad to be placed in the dome of the inside fitting cover which may be pushed down to follow the tobacco as it is used out of the package to keep the moist air confined as close as desired to the contents. In the case of a newly filled ackage this internal sliding cover may be ,ashed down into close contact with the tobacco, holding the same from shaking about in the package in transportation and keeping the Contents practically sealed from outside influences. The sliding dome shaped horizontal position. A ring and staple affords convenient means for manipulating the sliding cover and also for holding the moistening pad in place.
In the said drawings, A represents the Specification of Letters Patent.
cover may be readily inserted by starting sald cover vertically and turning it into the Patented July is, rare.
Serial No. 755,815.
body of the sheet metal can. B is the ordinary bottom secured thereto.
C is a common form of slip cover fitting over the upper end of the can and setting down against a bead c. D is the dome shaped interior fitting follower cover having the depending flange d to fit the interior of the can.
E is any ordinary moistening pad or sponge which may be held in place by the staple F to which may be attached the handle ring G. As indicated in the dotted lines of Fig. 1, this dome sliding cover may be pushed down to the bottom of the can, if desired, and may be thus made to follow the tobacco as the same is being used out. To insert the dome shaped cover it is convenient to start it in a vertical position, as shown at Fig. 3, and turn it after the dome shaped cover has been pushed part way in.
- lVhen the sliding cover is pushed down to engage the tobacco, its depending flange 65 will be arrested by thetobacco and support the cover at a considerable distance above the body of the tobacco forming a moist air space which extends over the whole body of the tobacco. The bottom edge of the depending flange serves as a scraper edge to remove any particles of tobacco which, :owing to their moisture, may cling to the inner side of the container and might cause the formation of mold thereon and the infection of the body of the tobacco.
I claim A tobacco container comprising a sheet metal can having a cover in combination with a second internal follower cover havmg a depending flange forming a scraper edge arranged along the vertical wall of the contamer, which flange is arrested by the tobacco inthe container when the inner cover is inserted therein so as to form a moist air chamber above the surface of the tobacco, and a moistening pad attached to the under surface of the inner cover, substantially as specified.
ISAAC J. MARCUSE.
