To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hughesville, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Clamp for Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to im rovements in devices for locking the top 0 an extension table when closed or open, or when supplied with additional fillers.
The adjustable slides of extension tables are fastened to the 'two sections ofthe top of the table and the extension of these two sections islimited by the action of the slides.
Therefore, if the slides are locked at any place and cannot be opened without first unocking the slides.
It is the object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which is extremely simple in construction, and which can be readily applied to any ordinar extension table without altering or mo ifying the' structure thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a locking device which will not interfere with the free sliding movement of the-- parts when the table is'to be placed in extended position.
With these objects in view, the inventionconsists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which F1 re 1 1s a perspective vlew of the table, showing the application of the invention. Fi 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of ig. 1.
The drawin shows a divided pedestal extension table, ut it will be understood that the device may be applied to any other form of extension table.
The two pedestal sections are indicated at 5, and the table to sections at 6. To the top of the edesta sections are rigidly secured cross ars 7 which support the extension slides 8. The locking device is mounted on one of the bars 7, and comprisesa U-.
n'ating in inturned portions 12 between which the extension slides are received. The bar 9 is secured to 'the inner edge of the bar 7 by means of screws or other suitable fastening means 13 passing through slots 14 in the bar 9 and into the bar 7. The slots 14: extend in the direction of the length of the bar 9 for a purpose to be presently made clear.
At 15 is indicated a clamping screw which is threaded through the upturned end 11 of the device so that it may be screwed against the adjacent slide 8.
The device herein described forms a clamp, the fixed jaw of which is the upturned end 10, and the movable jaw the screw 15, and upon turning the screw in the proper direction, the slides 8 will be tightly clamped between the jaws. The slides are released by backing the screw. By thus pressing or drawing the slides together, the table sections are rigidly locked in adjusted position. The slots 14 permit the clampin device to move slightly on the bar 7 in a (l II'GCtlOII transverse of the slides, when the screw 15 is operated to clamp the slides, and upon loosening the screw to release the slides, the slight resiliency in the latter, forces the clamping device back to its original position, which leaves the slides entirely free, and enables them to be adjusted without danger of binding orsticking, which would be liable to happen if the clamp were ri 'dly secured to the bar 7.

It will be understood, of course, that a clam ing device as herein described may be on one of the table sections, and engageable with the slides for looking the same together edgewise, the intermediate portion of the clamp being slotted, and fastening means passing through said slots whereby the clamp is loosely mounted and free toyield in a direction transverse of the slides.
