Be it known that I, GEORGE C. Mclav, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

rIlhis invention relates to improvements on key fasteners.

The main objects of this invention are, iirst, to provide an improved key fastener which is adapted to be used in connection with the common form of door lock, without modifying the lock or the escutcheon l plate thereof. Second, to provide an improved key fastener which may be very easily and readily attached to the door, which is at the same time very secure when adjusted to engage the key, and is capable of rapid adjustment or manipulation. rI`hird, to provide an improved key fastener which is very economical in structure, and which is unobtrusive and attractive in appearance.

Further objects, and objects relating` to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly dened and pointed out in the claims A. structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines. l

Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a door. 2 a lock, 3 an escutcheon plate, and t the lock key. The key engaging support member 7 is preferably formed of sheet metal, as is illustrated in Figs, 1, 2 and 3.

rIhe support 7 has a longitudinal hole 8 therein, in which the key engaging member 5 is slidably arra ged. In the face of the support a longitudinal slot through which the thumb screw 10 is arranged, the thumb screw being threaded into the key engaging member, so that it. may be adjusted to clamp the key engaging' member in any desired position. The thumb screw is preferably provided with 'a knurled head or linger piece l1. rIhe thumb screw forms a finger piece for the manipulation of the key engaging member. The key support 7 is provided with a shoulder 13 adapted to engage the eseutcheon plate which assists in the same. The support 7 is provided wit-h a laterally projecting ear 14 on each side, perforated to receive the screws 15, by which it is secured to the door. The shoulder 13 when engaging the escutcheon plate, relieves these screws of a large amount of the strain to which they would be subjected through an effort to manipulate the key while the key engaging member 6 was in engagement therewith.

In forming the support 7 of sheet metal as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the metal is folded into a rectangular tube having a longitudinal slit on its underside, the ear portion being extended downwardly to form the shoulders 18 and thence outwardly to form the horizontal portion of the ears.

In the modified construct-ion shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the support 7 is a casting. In this modification the thumb screw engages the bottom of the hole S in clamping the key engaging member instead of clamping the key engaging member against the top of the support as in the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

.It is obvious that this object is very simple and economical in structure, and it may be very easily and quickly secured to a door without modifying the lock or escutcheon plate, and although it may be made of comparatively light material, and of small size, it possesses sufiicient strength for the purpose. It also has the merit of bein@ comparatively inconspicuous, or unobtrusive, and is at the same time ornamental.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a key fastener, the combination of a bar-like key engaging member; a support in which said key engaging member is slidably CII arranged, said support having a slot through a the top thereof arranged longitudinally of the said key engaging member, and being provided With an escutcheon plate engaging shoulder, and with a pair of laterally projecting ears perforated t0 receive securing screws; and a thumb screw arranged through said slot into said support and threaded into said key lengaging member, whereby said key engaging member may be secured in its adjusted positions, said thumb screw being adapted to serve as a inger piece for said key engaging member and the ends of said slot being adapted to serve as stops for limiting the adjustment of said key engaging member and retaining it in its said support.

2. In a key fastener, the combination of a bar-like key engaging member; a support in which said key-engaging member is slidably arranged, said support having a slot at the top thereof arranged longitudinally of said key-engaging member, said support being formed of a piece of sheet metal folded into a rectangular tube, the edges of the metal being brought together on the under side of' the support, a portion of the metal intermediate the ends of the tube being Oifset and turned laterally to provide attaching ears and an eseutcheon plate engaging shoulder; and a thumb screw arranged through said slot in said support and threaded into said key-engaging member whereby said key engaging member may be clamped against the top oi said support for securing it in position, the ends o-the slots eoacting With said screw to serve as stops for limiting the movement of said key-engaging member and retaining it in its said support.
