L. FURLONG.
OLEAT FOR ELECTRIC WIRES.
Patented-Aug. 5, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE FURLONG, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO FRED- ERICK C. ROCKWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
CLEAT FOR ELECTRIC WIRES.
SPECTFIICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,561, dated August 5, 1890.
Application filed February 18, 1889. Renewed July 9, 1890 Serial No. 358,121. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE FURLONG, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cleats for Electric \Vires, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a eleat embodyxo ing my said improvement. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view thereof in cross-section on the plane 00 cc, Fig. 2.
The object and purpose of thisimprovement are the production of a novel and handy cleat for attaching an electric wire to the ceiling 01 wall of a room or the like in a manner which will prevent. the Wire from having any lateral motion, but will not prevent from such longitudinal motion as necessarily results fromv the expansion and contraction of the wire by varying degrees of heat and cold.
The letter a denotes one part of the cleat, and 1) denotes a screw for fastening the same to the ceiling of a room or the like. Thelet- 2 5 ter 0 denotes the other part of the cleat. The part a is provided with projecting way-flanges a a, and the part c has corresponding waygrooves c c, which fit to and slide upon the way-fianges a. These way-grooves are par- 0 allel with the line-socket. It will be readily understood that by means of these cooperating way-flanges and way-grooves the part 0 can be readily engaged with and disengaged from the part a. In and between these two half in each of these two parts.
parts a and c is a line-socket d, formed one- 3 5 In the use of this device the part a is first affixed to the ceiling of a room or the like by means of the screw 1), then the electric wire a is placed in that portion of the line-socket which is in the part a, and then the part c is engaged with the part a. This produces a fastening which is attachable to the ceiling of a room or the like by a single screw, which is susceptible of being made ornamental in appearance, because the part 0 covers up all the rest, by the use of which an electric wire can be put in place and removed at pleasure, which prevents the wire from having accidental lateral play, (a frequent source of confiagratiom). but which permits the wire to have such small longitudinal motion as results from expansion and contraction of the wire through varying degrees of heat and cold without affecting the substantial integrity of 5 5 the fastening.
I claim as my improvement In combination, the part a, provided with way-flanges a a and line'socket (1, parallel with the way-groove, the screw 1), and the part 0, provided with waygrooves c c and linesocket d, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
- LAWRENCE FURLONG.
