HVVE/VfOR GEoReE W. NILES.
- ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES GEORGE W. NILES, OF VANVVERT, OHIO.
DOOR-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Application filed February 3, 1904:. Serial No. 191,909.
To ail whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. NILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vanwert, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in that class of door-securers which are adapted for use independently of the ordinary latch or bolt forming an attachment of a door, the same having a member provided with a claw that engages the door-jamb and another member which is adjustable on the first-named one and adapted to abut the adjacent edge of the door, and thus prevent the latter being opened from without.
The details of construction, arrangement, and operation of parts are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved door-securer. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the wedge member and the means for clamping it to other parts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the jamb-plate. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the door-abutting plate. Fig. 5 is an illustration of the manner of applying the doorsecurer in practice.
1 indicates an elongated plate having a claw 2 at one end, a lengthwise slot 3 adjacent to the other end, and a series of notches or open slots 4 in the middle portion of its upper edge. This plate is applied to the jamb when the door-securer is put in use, as shown in Fig. 5, the claw 2 entering the wood, as there shown.
5 indicates an elongated plate having a rightangular flange or shoulder 6 at one end, a lengthwise slot 7, a notch 8 in its upper edge, and a catch or locking device 9, which is pivoted to said plate 5 and provided at its free end with a lateral projection or flange 10, which is adapted to enter the notches 4: and 8 in the respective plates 1 and 5, when the door-securer is applied as shown in Fig. 5.
11 indicates a wedge which is arranged on the inner or claw side of the jamb-plate l and is provided with a laterally-projecting screwthreaded stud 12, to which a nut 13, having an enlarged and milled head, is applied. The
The manner of applying the door-securer is as follows: The door y being open and the nut 13 being loosened to allow the plate 5 and wedge 11 to be turned or swung back out of the way, the plate 1 is applied to the jamb X in horizontal position, with its claw 2 abutting the shoulder :20. The door is then closed so that it abuts the shoulder 00, as shown in Fig. 5, whereby the claw 2 is forced into the jamb to a greater or less depth. The plate 5 and wedge 11 are then swung into horizontal position and slid forward, so that the flange 6 of plate 5 abuts the door, whereupon the catch 9 is dropped into engagement with the notch 8 of plate 5 and one of the notches of the jamb-plate 1. The thickness of the door y will obviously determine the distance between the claw 2 and flange 6 of the respective plates, and accordingly the particular notch4= which will be engaged by the catch 9. The wedge 11 is then forced inward so that its point presses between the jamb X and the jamb-plate 1, whereupon the nut 13 is screwed up tightly, so as to clamp the three parts 1, 5, and 11 firmly together. It will be seen that by this arrangement the door y is firmly secured, since the catch 9 will prevent the door-plate 5 from sliding on the jamb-plate 1, even if insufiicient friction for this purpose should be applied by the nut 13. It will be further seen that the wedge 11 crowds the outer portion of the jamb-plate 1 away from the jamb, and thus tends to hold the claw 2 firmly engaged.
What 'I claim is- 1. The door-securer comprising the slotted jamb-plate having a claw at one end, another slotted plate having a flange at one end, a wedge arranged slidably on the innerside of the jamb-plate, means for clamping the three parts together, and a catch pivoted to the door-plate and adapted to engage with the two plates and lock them together, substantially as described.
' 2. In a door-securer of the class specified, the combination, with the jamb-plate having a claw at one end and provided with a series of notches in its upper edge, and a second plate having a door-abutting flange at one end and provided With a notch in its upper edge, of a catch pivoted to the door-plate and 5 having its free end bent laterally and adapt- GEORGE W. NILES.
Witnesses:
ed to enter the slots and thus lock the two LOUISE F. EVANS, plates together, and means for holding the C. EBLEN.
