UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN I. DORWARD, OF MARION, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO CHARLES F. CARROLL, OF MARION, OIIIO.
MUSIC-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Original application filed December 13. 1906, Serial No. 347.710. Divided and this application filed March 5. 1907. Serial No. 360.700.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, EDWIN P. Donwnnn, citizen of the United States, residing at M a- .rion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to music holders, being a divisional part of an application for patent for music leaf turner filed by me Docember 13, 1906, Serial No. 347,710.
The device is of peculiar formation being adapted most especially for holding music embodying a number of sheets required to be turned, since it readily adapts itself to the varying thickness of different pieces, or compositions.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specifications,*Figurc 1 is a front View of the holder showing it in connection with a leaf turner such as disclosed in my application hereinbefore identified. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line a'n; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line yiy of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The devices illustrated in Fig. 1 comprises a casing 1, leaf turning arms 2 provided at their outer ends with leaf clamps and leaf engaging rods 24 detachably fitted to the leaf clamps all substantially as set forth in my prior application noted herein.
A support 40 projects upwardly from the casing 1 and receives the clamp or holder by means of which the music is held when placed in position. The clamp for receiving the back of the music consists of companion members 41 and 42 each being formed of a strip preferably of metal. The member 41 is fixed, Whereas the member 42 is movable. One of the members, as 41, is made hollow or concave upon its gripping face to prevent injury to the back of the music when held by the clamp. The end. portions of one of the members are deflected slightly towards the cooperating member to insure :firm griping of a piece of music comprising three eaves only, as well as adapting the clamp for holding a piece of music comprising a greater number of leaves. The deflected end portions of the clamp member, which in the present instance is the movable member.
42, gradually decrease in thickness towards the extremities to render thenrmore flexible, thereby permitting a continued movement of the clamp member 42, after its end portions have come in contact with the music. A wing 43 projects from the clamp member 42 about at a right angle and is provided with slots 44 to receive headed fastenings 45, by means of which member 42 is held to the support 40 and directed in its lateral movements. Light springs 46 are interposed between the outer ends of the slots 44. and a side of the headed fastenings 45, and serve to press the movable clamp member 42 outward. These springs 46 are located in the outer portions of the slots 44 and are protected thereby. A cam lever 47 is mounted upon the central headed fastening 45 and is adapted, when operated, to press the clamp member 42 inward so as to grip the piece of music placed in position between the clamp members 41 and 42.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a music holder, the combination of a framework and a clamp for the music, said clamp comprising a fixed member and a movable member, the latter having an outwardly extended wing provided with hori zontal slots, fastening means passed through said slots to hold the movable clamp member in place and direct the same in its movements towards and from the fixed member, springs located in the outer portions of said horizontal slots and confined between the said fastenings and the closed ends of the slots and normally exerting a pressure to hold the movable clamp member away from the fixed clamp member, and means for advancing the clamp member to grip a piece of music placed between the two clamp members.
2. A music holder comprising a frame work, a fixed clamp member, a movable clamp member, one of said clamp members having its end portions deflected towards the other clamp mei-nber and one of said clamp members having its gripping face made concave transversely, a wing extending from the movable clamp member and pro vided with horizoi'ital slots, fastenings passed through said slots for securing the clamp member to the framework and directing said clamp member in its movements, and a cam lever mounted upon one of said fastening 5 clamp for the music, comprising a fixed mem- 'ber and a movable member, the latter having an outwardly extended wing provided with slots, fastenings passed through said slots and a cam lever for actuating the movable 10 member, mounted upon one of the aforementioned fastenings, and springs mounted in the outer portions of said slots and confined between the same and the said fastenings and normally exerting an outward pressure upon the movable clamp member. In testimony whereof I a'HiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
