. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed October 10, 1907. Serial No. 396,713.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER C. RosEN- FELD, a citizen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Beam-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein exand thebest mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle so as to distingulsh it from other inventions.
My invention relates to adjustable beam clamps, its object being to provide a structure which may be economically manufac- Said invention conslsts of me ans hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail, certain mechmeans constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied.
In said annexed drawing :Figure 1 represents an elevation of the two main clamping members showing the inner side ofone and the outer side of the other. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the beam clamp assembled. Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 represents a partial view of a beam clamp embodying a part of my invention, showing a modified form of cli Fig. 5 represents a cross-sectional view ta (en upon the plane indicated by the line VV in Fig. 4. e The two main members A A are duplicates of each other, the outer ends of each being formed with a hook-portion a which. together with a seat portion a receives the edge-portion of the li-beam flange, as will be readily understood. The inner side of the shank portion a is serrated to form teeth (1 The other side of such shank-portion is provided with a longitudinal groove a In assembling the clam s the two members A A are placed with their serrated surfaces contiguous to each other and overlapping, as shown in Fig. 2. These overlapping portions are secured to each other transversely by means of an open-ended clip B which is rovided'with inwardly curved jaws b b w ose extremities enter and slide in the grooves a.
The one side of the clip is provided with a hole tap ed out to receive a set-screw b. The sai hole is made to lie opposite the lower portion of the contiguous member A and below the groove a. It will therefore be seen that by turning the screw its inner end will engage the contiguous surface of the member A thereby clam ing the two members together transversely and causing the serrations to engage and secure the said two members against longitudinal movement.
By providing an open-ended clip and grooves it will be seen that the clip may be slid on and ofi? the members A without separating them, and the clip when engaged in the grooves will remain in place when the set-screw is loosened. It will further be noted that the clip does not extend above the upper surface of the overlapping portion and hence ofiers no obstruction at that point.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modified form of clip in which a screw C is. .used to draw the two jaws together to engage the portion (1, the necessary elasticity being rovided by the formation of a slot W. The ower ends of the clip may be provided with a tapped-out hole, as shown, in which may be secured a rod or other member which it may be desired to sup ort.
Other modes of app ying the principle of my invention may be employed, instead of the one explained, and change may be made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means covered by any one of the following claims be employed.
1, therefore, particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of two members adapted to be juxtaposed to overlap each other, the outer end portions of such members being formed to engage a beam, and the surfaces rendered contiguous by such juxtaposition being serrated; the outer lateral faces of the overlapping ortions of said members being each provi ed res ectively with a groove, an open-ended c ip slidable in said grooves, and a set screw adapted, in conjunction with said clip to fix the two members transversely whereby said serrationsare caused to be fixedly engaged.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of two members adapted to be juxtaposed. to overia' each other, the outer said clip and adapted to have its inner end end portions thereof being formed to receive en age the contiguous member. 10 a beam, and the surfaces rendered oonigned by me, this 23" day of September, tiguous' by such juxtaposition being' ser- 1907.
rated, the outer lateral faces of the over- MORTIMER C. ROSENFELD.
iapfiing portions being provided res ectively Attested by, wt a groove; an open-ended clip s idable in LENA A. DIRLAN, said grooves; and a set screw mounted'in JENNIE E. GARY.
