UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. NAGLEE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WORK-HOLDING CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,959, dated June 14, 1881,
Applicationfiled April18 ,1881. (NomodeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I J OSEPH M. NAGLEE, a citizen of the United States, residingin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Work-Holding Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clamps for holding strips of wood together until the glue used for uniting them has become sufficiently set, the object of my invention being to combine inone instrument means for holding one or more strips, and for clamping to the same another strip or strips, as lully explained hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of one form of my improved clamp; Fig. 2, an edge view of the same, and
Figs. 3 and 4 views showing other forms of the clamp.
The clamp shown in Fig. 1 consists of a metal yoke, A, each arm a of which terminates in a hub, vand through each hub passes a clamping-screw, b, the two screws of the arms being in line with each other. A third screw, d, arranged at right angles to the screws 1) 1), passes through the central hub, e, of the yoke midway or thereabout between the two arms.
One of the uses of this clamping device is illustrated in Fig. 1,.where D represents a strip of wood, to which another strip, E, has to be glued. The strip D is firmly held by and between the two screws 1) bin such a position that one edge of the strip D is directly opposite the end of the screw d, so that after a proper application of glue the strip E may be held by the screw 61 against the edge of the strip D until the glue has become properly set, the screws 12 b retaining the strip D so firmly that it will not yield under the action of the screw d.
The strips of wood may be of such a length as to demand the use of two ormore clamps A.
desirable to glue two strips of wood arranged at right angles to each other to a third strip held by and between the screws 1) b.
While the clamp has been designed for use in making small wooden structures-such, for instance, as those made by amateurs by the aid of scroll-saws-it may be made on a large enough scale to be used by carpenters and cabinet-makers.
I prefer to make the clamps of malleable cast-iron.
I claim as my invention- 1. Ihe within-described clamp, consisting of the metal yoke A, provided with a screw, d, and having arms (6 a, united atone end only of theyoke, each arm being provided with a screw or screws, b, the screw or screws of one arm being in line with the screw or screws of the other arm and at right angles to the screw d, all substantially as set forth.
2. Thecombination of the yoke, its'screw d, r
