ton, in the county of Walsh and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Box-Lid Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a device for holding a box-lid in an open position.

The invention is especially applicable to cigar-boxes. I

The object of the invention is to produce a device of this class which is of very simple construction and easily applied, operating to hold the lid in any position desired.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and definitely set forth in theclaims.

Adj acent to the main bar 5 a second bar 8 is provided, which is rigidly attached to the main bar by a metal sleeve 9, located near the offset 6, as indicated. The bodies of these bars 5 and 8 diverge at their extremities 10, which lie remote from the sleeve 9, and at their points they are formed with oppositely-disposed nibs or teeth 11, which are adapted to grasp an object therebetween, as will be readily understood. It should be noted that the bar 8 would preferably be of stout wire" like the bar 5, and this wire would be resilient and formed so that the extremities 10 would tend to hold themselves slightly a art. The butt 12 of the bar 8 extends beyon the sleeve 9 in the direction of the 'foot 7 and terminates a short distance from the foot, whereby an opening or jaw 13 is formed, into which the edge 14 of thebox-lid may bethrust, as indicated in Fig. 1. This extrem- 1ty of the device constitutes a stirrup, which holds the box-lid.

The point at which the nibs 11 are made to engage the .box end maybe selected, so asto give the box- When lid 3 anydesired angular position. the edge 14 of the lid is received in the space 13, the extremity of the butt 12 lies adjacent to the forward side of the lid, as shown, and the foot or extension 7 extends itself longitudinally of the lid, projecting under the edge and constituting a substantial support for the lid, as will be readily understood. The opening or space between the butt 12 and the foot 7 is preferably slightly greater than the thickness of the lid of the cigar-box.

-The device is preferably applied so that it is disposed substantially at right angles to the lid, the edge of the lid being received at the foot 7, as suggested. Then the device is rotated'down at its outer extremity, so as to inch the lid between the butt 12 and the oot, and the other end of the device is then attached to the end of the cigar-box, as shown.

The device described is evidently of very simple construction and may be economically manufactured. It is also easily applied to boxes of various thicknesses by reason of the construction employed for gras ing the box end. 'It is also evident that t e device may be applied to either end of the box with e ual facility.

- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A holder for the lid of a'box comprising an elongated member having a laterally-disposed extension adapted to rest against the rear .faceof the open lid, said member comprising a pair of adjacent bars diverging at the extremities thereof remote from said extension, said extremities presenting a space therebetween adapted to receive the edge of the box end, and a sliding ring mounted on saidbars,

A holder for a box-lid comprising a main bar having a laterally-disposed extension at one extremity thereof constituting a foot adapted to be applied to the rear face of an open box-lid, a second bar rigidly attached to said first bar and having a butt projecting to a point near said extension, the extremities of said bars remote from said extension diverging to receive the edge of the box end therebetween and presenting nibs adapted to r 5 engage the box end, and a sliding ring on said bars controlling the extremities thereof.
