WILLIAM HENRY GARLOCK, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SUPPORT FOR THE FRONTS 0F COATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 16, 1909.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910. Serial No. 523,001.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY GAR- LOCK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for the Fronts of Coats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to coats and like articles of wearing apparel, and the principal object is to provide means for bracing or supporting the garment so that the shape of the same will be preserved and also to cause the garment to fit snugly about the body of the wearer.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a front View of a coat, partly broken away to show the application of the improved braces thereto. Fig. 2 is a side View of a coat, also broken away to show the brace. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the improved brace.
In the accompanying drawing the inven-' tion has been shown applied to a coat, each shoulder portion thereof being equipped with a brace, the braces being of duplicate construction.
Referring to said drawing by numerals, 1 designates a coat which has the usual lining 2, and 3 designates the outer cloth. The improved brace is preferably formed of a single strip of thin narrow flexible material such as sheet metal, whale bone, rubber, or the like which is provided with regularly spaced enlarged openings 4, one end being widened as indicated at 5 and provided with openings 6. The widened portion 5 affords means whereby the bracing-means can be more securely held in place. Said strip has one end in the form of a hook 7 which fits over the shoulder of the coat, the intermediate portion 8 conforming to the contour of the front portion of the collar and lapel of the coat, said intermediate portion terminating in the angularly arranged extension 9 which is equipped with the widened portion 5 which extends to, or adjacent to the arm pits.
As is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the improved braces are fastened between the outer cloth and the lining of the coat by the stitches 10 which pass through the openings 46. It will be seen that the said braces owing to the manner of fastening the same to the shoulders so that they will follow the curvature of the coat collar and extend to the arm pits, are constantly exerting a pressure to hold the coat snugly and properly shaped about the body of the wearer.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A bracing-means for a body garment formed of a strip of resilient material having a shoulder engaging portion, an intermediate collar portion and an angular end portion, said bracing-means being also provided with regularly spaced enlarged thread-receiving openings.
2. A bracing means for a coat comprising a strip of resilient material provided with a curved upper portion adapted to overlap the shoulder, the lower portion being bent at an angle and terminating in an enlarged triangular end portion, said strip and end por-' tion being provided with stitch-receiving openings.
3. A bracing-means for a body garment formed of a strip of resilient material, the upper end being bent to overlap the shoulder, the intermediate portion conforming to the shape of the collar and the lower portion bent at an angle and terminating in an enlarged portion, said bracing-means being provided with enlarged stitchreceiving openings, the w'alls of said openings joining the body of the bracing-means at an angle.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY GARLOOK.
Witnesses:
