Description
SU SPENDERSQQ' E H APPLICATION HLED OCT- 23; I916.
Patented July 22, 1919.
ATTORNEYS I SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed October 23, 1916. Serial Nc. 127,286.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD SHANKS, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Belfast, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to suspenders and it has for its object to so manufacture the same that they will give better support to the garment suspended from them, with greater comfort in wear, than could be obtained with the forms of suspenders hitherto used.
Under my invention and in combination with a back member adapted to fit in collar fashion over the back and top of the shoulders, I provide front portions, so made that at each side of the wearers body one front portion is, at its lower end, brought near to the center of the top of the trousers or other garment and, preferably, another front portion at each side is also provided and so made that its lower end is brought toward or near to the center of the side of the garment, the two front portions at each side being connected to and suspended from the collar at or near the same point, and so that they diverge therefrom in the desired directions. This construction and suspension gives proper support to the garment all around and particularly in front, where, with the present forms of suspenders there is generally an objectionable sagging down of the garment. The improved suspenders have the further advantage that they cannot accidentally slip off the shoulders.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood I have hereunto appended a drawing which shows by way of illustration or example, suspenders made in accordance with my invention.
Figure 1 shows one form of my improved suspenders, the braces being laid out flat in order to properly show their shape and construction.
Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 a back view, showing the suspenders in use.
On the drawings the same reference letters wherever repeated indicate the same or similar parts.
Referring to the drawings a is a back member with a saddle shaped portion a which at the top forms a collar a The ends a and a of the collar a are cut at an angle to the center line of the back member a and the upper ends Z2 of the two front members 5 at each side are cut to a corresponding angle so that when said front members are secured in position, to the collar a they will, owing to this construction, be so set that when the suspenders are being worn, the lower ends 6 of the front members Z) will be brought near to the center of the front of the garment as shown at 5 6 Fig. 2. Similarly, in the example shown, the other two front members 0 have their upper ends 0 cut at an angle corresponding to the angled ends of the collar a so that when secured thereto, they will, 0-wing to this construction, be so set that when the suspenders are being worn the lower ends of these front members 0 will be brought near to the center of the side of the garment as shown at 0 0 Fig. 2.
In the example shown, the front members 0 are secured to the collar 42 and the front members 6 are secured near to the tops of the front members a, but of course, the front members 6 could also be directly connected to the collar of.
Connecting tabs such as d or any form of connecting devices may be used for connecting the lower ends of the suspenders with the garment.
The front members 0 could, if desired, be dispensed with and only the single front members 6 be provided at each side, double connecting tabs cZ being provided for connecting the lower ends of each front member to the garment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. Suspenders comprising a back member adapted to fit in collar fashion over the back and top of the shoulders of the wearer, and a pair of members connecting with each front end of said back member immediately adjacent the shoulders, and one member of each pair being adapted to be brought near to the center of the top of the trousers.
2. Suspenders comprising a back member adapted to fit over the back and shoulders of the wearer, and front members arranged in pairs with the members of each pair overlapping and secured to an end portion of the back mernber near the shoulders, one In testimony whereof I affix my signature member of a pair being adapted to have its in presence of two Witnesses.
lower end brought near the center of the top EDWARD SHANKS, of the trousers and the other member of Witnesses:
such pair being adapted to be brought to- GUY H. HITCH,
Ward the center of the sides of the trousers. ANDREW HAMILTON.
