Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 194?.
Application filed June 23, 1916. Serial No. 105,402,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J UILIUs KAPLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in" the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in garments, and, this invention relates, more particularly, to a novel garment for the special use of automobilists, with a view of providing a garment which can be arranged over the usual wearing apparel of the automobilists when compelled, while on the road, or otherwise, to make necessary and unexpected repairs to the engine or other parts of the vehicle, or while cleaning the same.
The invention has for its principal object to provide what may be termed a slipover garment which can be easily and quickly placed in position over the usual wearing apparel of the person, and at the same time providing a working garment which shall not be unsightly in appearance.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly evident from the following detailed description of the present invention. 7
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel slip-over garment hereinafter set forth, and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several parts theregarment showing one" embodiment of the principles of the present invention.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional representation, taken on line 44 in said Fig. 2 of the lower .portion of one of the leg-members of the garment.
Similar characters of reference are em ployed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures ofthe drawings, the reference- characters 1 and 2 indicate, respectively, the shirt and the trousers of the usual wearing apparel worn by a person.
The slip-over garment which embodies the principles of the present invention is indicated by the reference-character 8, and the same comprises an upper waist-like member 4 which is provided with sleeves 5, and is open at the neck, as at 6. Suitably connected with the said waist-like member 4 are a pair of suitably formed leg-members 7, said members 7 preferably forming an integral portion of the said member 4. As shown more particularly in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the waist-like member 4 may be made in two parts, the said parts beingstitched together at the front of the garment along a central and vertically disposed line or seam 8. Upon ing suliicient material at the sides of the garment and providing a pair of shoulder-portions 10 whereby the rear of the waist-like member may be snugly fitted to the body of the wearer to prevent at the front an objeotionable hang of the garment which would interfere with the working of the wearer, especially beneath a car or the like. The said shoulder-portions 10 are adapted to be brought together at their edges 11, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and adapted to be connected by means of suitable fastening means, as a hook and eye'12. Each leg-portion or member 7 is also cut away, as at 13, and between the respective cut away portions 9 and 13 are parts 14 with which are suitably connected straps or bands 15 provided with a suitable fastening means, as a hook and eye 16. Thus it will be seen, that the rear or back of the garment is left a with an open portion 17 extending from the shoulder members 10 down the entire back of the garment to the extreme lower ends of the leg-members 7 which are thus left open, as at 18.
The lower or open ends of the sleeves are suitably gathered as at 19, and in the gathers thus provided there may be disposed, if deis worn. The lower end-portion of each legmember 7 is also provided with gathers, as
' 19, and arranged or suitably disposed in each gathering 19 is a spring-clamp or holder, as 20, usually made of a metal having spring-like properties. Suitably connected with one of the shoulder-members 10, as at 21, is a strap'or band 22 which 'extends in a downward direction across the open portion 17 and terminates at the crotch or part where the leg-members 7 are con-' nected with the waist-member 4, said-strap or'band 22 being suitably secured at that point, as at 23. Pockets 24 and 25 may be suitably disposed upon the garment, if desired, substantially in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
ihe purpose of the present invention is to provide a garment of the character shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the foregoing specification, which can be quickly placed about the body of the wearer, upon the usual wearing apparel, and to provide a garment which is neat in appearance. a
In arranging the garment about the bod of the wearer, over his usual wearing apparel, the person places one of his legs over the strap or band 22, then slips his arms through the sleeves 5 and arranges the shoulder-members over his shoulders, fastening the said shoulder-members by means of the hook and eye 12 or other fastening means, at the same time connecting the two strap or band-portions 15 by means of the hook and eye 16 or other fastening means, as shown more particularly in said Fig. 3 of the drawings. The lower portions of the leg-members 7 are thereupon fastened about the ankles of the wearer by opening out the free ends of the spring-clamp 20 and slipping the open portions 26, see Fig. 4 of the drawings, upon the ankles of the wearer so that the leg-portions will be clamped about the said ankles and the leg-portions 7 properly held in position upon the legs of the wearer, in the manner shown in Figs. 1, 2
and 3 of the drawings, and as will be clearly understood from an inspection of the said figures of the drawings.
' It will be clearly evident from the foregoing description of the present invention that by the production of a garment of the character herein described a working garment is produced which can be quickly placed about the body of the wearer, over his usual wearing apparel and can be just as readily removed therefrom.
While I have described the use of my masses novel form of garment for use. more especially by automobilists, of course, it will be understood that the garment may also be worn by' others performing any work, and desiring .to prevent their outer garments from becomingsoiled.
I am fully aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of. the several devices and parts without departing from the scope of the present invention, as set forth" in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1 1. A garment of the character specified comprising a body open at the back, said R portion of said body, said strap extending in a downward direction and being attached to the crotch-portion of the body with its leg-members so as to prevent dropping of the garment-portions at the crotch of the garment.
2. A garment of the character specified comprising a waist-member having shoulder-portions, arms, and leg-members extending from said waist-member, said garment being open at the back and said open portion extendin down each leg-member, anda stra attac ed at one end to one of said shoul er-portions, said strap extendin in a downward direction and the other end of said strap extending in a forwarddirection into the crotch of thegarment at the point of connection of the sa1d leg-members with said waist-member and being attached at said point to prevent sagging or dropping of the garment-portions located at the said crotch, and means connected with said various garment-members for securing the garment about the wearer.
3. A garment of the character specified comprising a waist-member having shoulderportions, arms, and leg-members extending from said waist-member, said garment being open at the back and said open portion extending down each legmember, and a strap attached at one end to one of said shoulderportions, said strap extending in a downward direction and the other end of said strap extending in a" forward direction into the crotch of the arment at the point of connection of the sa1d leg-members with said waist-member and being attached at said point to prevent sagging or dropping of the garment-portions located at the said crotch,
and a strap attached at one end to one of said shoulder-portions, said strap extending in a downward direction and the other end of said strap extending in a forward direction into the crotch of the garment at the point of connection of the said leg-members with said waist-member and being attached at said point to prevent sagging or dropping of the garment-portions located at the said crotch, means connected with said waist-member for securing said waist-member about the body of the wearer, and spring-like clamping members connected with the lower portions of the open legmembers of the arment for springing said lower portions of the leg-members into held relation about the ankles of the wearer.
5. A garment of the character specified comprising a waist-member having shoulder-portions, arms, and leg-members extending from said waist-member, said garment being open at the back and said open portion extending down each leg-member, and a strap attached at one end to one of said shoulder-portions, said strap extending in a downward direction and the other end of said strap extendin ina forward direction into the crotch of the arment at the point of connection of the sa1d leg-members with said waist-member and being attached at said point to prevent sagging or dropping of the garment-portions located at the said crotch, fastening means connected with the said shoulder portions, straps connected with the garment at points intermediate of the waist-member and the said leg-members, fastening means connected with said straps, and spring-like clamping members connected with. the lower portions of the open legmembers of the garment for springing said lower portions of the leg-members into held relation about the ankles of the wearer.
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I'have hereunto set'my hand this 21st day of June, 1916.
