J. F. MARTIN. HAIR GURLER AND WAVER. APPLICATION FILED 1120.15, 1906.

UFID T% FAT F16 JAMES F. MARTIN, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE AS- SIGNMENTS, TO MAGIC CURLER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
HAIR CURLER AND WAVER.
Application filed December 15, 1906.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns F. li IARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, *tate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hair Curler and \Vaver, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hair curlers and wavers and consists in providing means for engaging with a tress or lock of hair at various points of its length.
It further consists in providing a rounded bar or strip and a cord, the bar or strip having means with which said cord engages for holding the same in position thereon.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the bar. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the bar showing the cord in posi tion. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the device showing the hair wound thereon and held in place.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings. In hair curlers and wavers it is necessary that a suitable support be provided upon which a lock of hair may be easily wound and some means are required for retaining the hair in position in the waver.
In the drawings, I have shown a form of curler for accomplishing this result but it will be evident that changes may be made therein which will come within the scope of my invention and which will accomplish the same result and I do not therefore desire to be limited to the exact construction herein shown and described.
1 designates a rounded bar or support, the same being provided at each end thereof with slots or recesses 2 and 3 and extending longitudinally therefrom and farther into the bar and the narrowed slots or recesses d and 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1910.
Serial No. 347,960.
6 designates a cord or elastic which is adapted to enter the slots 2 and 3 and to be seated in the narrowed slots 4 and 5, it being noted that the distance between the inner ends of said narrowed slots 4 and 5 is greater than the length of tlre cord or elastic, so that when said cord or elastic 6 is in position, the same will be taut or extended in length so that when the hair 7, as shown in Fig. 3, has been wound upon the bar and the cord is in position, it will hold the hair tightly against the bar 1 with the result that a curl or wave is imparted to the hair after the curler and cord are removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hair curler consisting of a round strip or bar having recesses at its end and narrowed recesses extending in alinement from said first mentioned recesses longitudinally of the bar, shoulders formed at the inner end of the wider recesses and means disconnected from said strip and adapted to be seated. in said narrower recesses to engage with said shoulders after the hair has been wound on said bar whereby the pressure on the hair may be varied.
2. A hair curler consisting of a rounded strip or bar having recesses at its ends, and narrower recesses extending in alinement from said first mentioned recesses longitudinally of the bar, shoulders formed at the in ner end of the wider recesses, and a flexible cord disconnected from said strip but adapted to be seated in said narrower recesses or on said shoulders after the hair has been wound on said bar in order to hold the hair in place on said bar.
