IMPROVEMENT IN' PAPER-FILES.
'The Schedule referred to in these Lettee-Patent and naking part of the samev 'lb dll whom it may concern Be itA knownthatl, HUBERT Boneless, of San Francisco, in the county ofi-San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Files; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and cxactdescription thereof, which will enable others. skilled in the art to inn-ke and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in files for papers, music in sheets, Src., and the combination therewith of a. portfolio, whereby it is designed to provide a simple and convenient arrangement of clamp ing-jaws for holding the paper, permitting the engagement with or disengagement from it, of the papers, with facility, the said jaws being actuated by screws and springs, and capable of employment either with or without the portfolio.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l represents a transverse section of my improved le and portfolio, the latter being in a closed position,
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the same in an open position.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents one of the clamping-jaws, provided with angular metallic pieces, B, the parts B' of which are rigidly secured to' the outer face of the jaw, the other parts being turned at right angles theretmrunder thebottoui thereof; thinning a means, irl/combination with other similarly-formed angle-pieces, C, made fast to the other jaw, I), upon the outside, of' :maintaining the jaws in the right position to clamp the papers to be held in the le at the onteiedges of the jaw.-
l'l represents bolts, having nuts for forcing the `jews together, to clamp thepaper, which are preferably arranged to pass through the said metallic angle-pieces B and C, and'made'fastin :the jaws A, As it is desirable, in order to give ample room for inserting' the papers within the' jaws,' that the bolts poss through the said jaws below thecen'tre line, (xi-nearer to the -baelc than the front oi' the saine, the tendency of the jaws, when screwed up nld be to vclose nearer together at the back than. dft the fion'ti'itliout the arrangement of the anglepieoes B and l); as above de- F represents springs, arranged between the jaws, to cause them to open when the nuts of the bolts E are turned in the right direction. These springs' are placed at the rear or bottom of the clamping-jaws,
A Patentand below the line of the bolts', whereby they assist the angle-pieces in causing the jaws to bite at their outer edges.
The angle-pieces B are provided with screw-holes, to admit of' fastening them, by screws, H, to the inner side of the back ci' a portfolio, I, as represented at G, or they may be permanently attached thereto .by rivets, or other means.
By this arrangement, it will be seen that my improved i'ile is equally well adapted for use separately, or combined witha-portfolio.
XVhen it' is used in combination with a portfolio, as a music-file, it is desirable to insure the opening and adjustment ot` the two parts of the portfolio in the same plane, in order that vthe hot-tom edges will rest properly on the narrow shelves of the music-stands. To insure this, Iarrange recesses in the bottom edges of the jaws, for the insertion of the shank of. the wrench K, which is also used for turning the nuts ot' the bolts E, between the jaws and the portfolio, as represented in red in iig. 2, whereby they will he secured in the right position to be supported 'in the best manner on the said 'music-stand, as will be clearly un derstood.
Instead, however, of making recesses in the jaws, as described, the portfolio may be sprung'away from them sufficiently to admit of the insertion" of the wrench, or any similar thing. K
Having thusdescribed my invention,
Iclaim as new, and desire to securenby4 Letters l 1. A pair or clamping-oars or jaws, A and D, held parallel or nearly parallel, by their flanges or anglepieces B and C, and bythebolts E, that draw them together, and so arranged as torclamp and hold the edges of papers, music-sheets, Sac., without perforating them, substantially as described.
2.1i; combination with the clamping-liars, ccnstructegl-as described, a portilio', provided with e rigid back, G, tc'nerve as a means ot' connecting the clamping-bars of the lilel to the portfolio, substantially as described. f
3. In combination with the clamping-bars of a paper-file and portfolio, the bar K, fitted to notches in the clam ping-bars to hold the portfolio open and spread the music-sheets, Src., whether applied as a wrench or otherwise. substantially as set forth.
