` Lmmrama No. 87,161-, dated Fama/ry 23,1869.
IMPRov'arrzerrr 1N PAPER-Frans.
The Schedule referred to in these LettereA Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom this lmel/y concer/n. 4
Be it knownthat I, J oHN O. FOSTER, -of Pecatonica, in the county of Winnebago, and Stateof Illinois, have invented an Improved Paper-File; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and letters marked thereon, making a part of this description, in which- Figure -l is a perspective representation of my in jvention.
Figure 2, a transverse section of the same.
Figure 3, a view of the twisted bar, on which the arms slide, removedfrom the other parts of the device.
The present invention relates to an improvement in that class of paper-tiles which are designed to hold letters, bills, newspapers, &c., in a convenient and compact form for use; and
I ts nature consists in the use of a two-part clamp, which has arms fastened and arranged to slide, on a twisted bar, by means of which the` papers are irmly held in place or loosened, by simply moving the arms longitudinally on said rod.-
. To enable others to make and use my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and will now give a detailed description.
A A represent the jaws of the clamp, whichI generally make of stair-rods, (or other suitable material,) as they are now made convex on one side and concave on the other, and are otherwise very suitable for the purpose; and on the inside of one or both of these jaws are rigidly fastened sharp brads or spikes I, of suitable size to hold the paper in place, in the usual manner.
Metal arms B B are-made with rectangular mortises through them, of suitable size to slide on a twisted bar, C, and their outer ends are riveted, or otherwise se`` curely fastened to the jaws A A of the clamp.
The bar G is made of steel, or other suitable material, and one of its ends is inserted in a handle, D, and
that-'part of it on which the arms B B slide is twisted, as clearly shown at figs. l and 3.
In the drawings, the rod or bar O is represented with y two twists one-fourth round each otherf Twis'ts, however, may be made on the bar, ifvit shall be'found necessary to use more than two sets of arms, and the twist may be quicker, if desired, but I nd that the bar, as described, answers the purpose well, and that the jaws of the clamp will openfar enough to receive any ordinary quantity of paper for a single le.
At g. l, it will be seen that each set of arms is I placed about as far from the others as one twist on the bar is long, and that only the arms of one j aw of the clamp slide on the twisted-parts; and, further, thatcylindrical washers Z Z are placed on the bar, between the sets of arms, t0 hold the jaws of the clamp in position, and, alt-the same time, regulate the distance that the jaws are tohave lfrom each other when they are open.
Operation.
At fig. 1, the jaws are represented as open, and in position to receive the papers. To close them, slide the arms forward from the handle, which operation will clamp the papers, as shown at iig. 2.
' The invention, as described, provides means for filing papers more rapidly than can be done by any other means of which I haveA knowledge, and the construction and arrangement are assumed to be novel. y
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
The combination of the clamp A A, arms'B B, and
bar O, the latter being twisted and the arms arrangedv vto slide-on it, substantially as and for the purpose herein speciied.
JOHN O. FOSTER.
