SETH WHITE PAINE, 0F WILLIAMSPOR'I, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 112,274, dated February 28, 1871 IMPROVEMENT lN CASE-SHOT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom a may concern Be it known that I, SETH WHITE Pnnvn, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycouiing and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shot; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being .had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation and a vertical central section of my improved shot Figure 2 is a side elevation of a cartridge containing said shot with the staves opened outward and Figure 3 is a vertical central section of the same,
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each-of the figures.
The object of my invention is to secure an increase of range for shot; and
It consists in shot haying the form of a short cylinder, and provided upon one end with a dowel-pin, and upon or within the opposite end with a corresponding recess, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
Experiencev has shown that in order to secure great length of range it is necessary that shot contained within a cartridge should be confined together ina greater or lesser degree in a line with the bore of the gun; but that, if said shot are too firmly bound, their operation as such is in a measure prevented.
- In order, therefore, to secure all advantages arising from such an arrangement and, at the same time, avoid the disadvantages above named, I construct each shot A in the form of a short cylinder, and provide one of its ends with a short dowel-pin, a, and form within the opposite end a recess, a, which corresponds with said dowel-pin, so as to permit a series of shot to be placed in line one above the other, in which position the doweled and recessed ends fit together and hold said shot in lateral position with sufiicient firmness to enable them to be driven to any desired distance without derangement, while, atthe same time, permitting themito readily separate when the required range is obtained.-
As thus constructed one or more longitudinal series of the shotare placed within a suitable case, B, and when fired from the gun are found to he sustained in their flight by their peculiar form, so that but a comparatively slight elevation of said gun is required to enable them to reach the desired distance.
'Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention,
What I claim as new is- The shot A, having the form of a short cylinder, with its ends correspondingly doweled and recessed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing ,I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of January, 1871.
' SETH WHITE PAINE.
