IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-KEYS.

` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making of the same.

To all whom lit may conce/ru.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM Lumen, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Watch-Keys; and I dol hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said dra-wings constitute part of this specication, and represent, in

The object of this invention is an attachment to a key, whereby the barrel may be closed when not in use, to prevent the entrance of any substance into the barrel; and consists in the arrangement of a spring or plate upon the outside of the barrel, so as to be turned'up over and cover the end of the barrel when not in use, and which, when turned to one side, uncovers the barrel for use.

In order to the clear understanding of my invention,

It is pivoted to the barrel at a, a convenient distance from the end of the barrel, so as to be turned from the barrel, as in fig. 2, and back over the barrel, as in 1.`

To produce a suticient amount of friction to hold the plate B in its position when turned away, I arrange an elliptic spring, d, (see fig. 1,) between thebody ofthe key and the plate B, which presses'against the .plate B with sutlicient force to 'retain it in any position to which it may be turned.

The end of the plate B, which covers the barrel, may have upon-its under surface a projection or indenta- Ition', so that, when turned overv the key, the, said projection will snap into the barrel, and thus hold the cover in that position.
