EDWARD A. STCKTN, SAN FRANCSCQ, CALIEORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 86,880, dated February 9, 1869.
IMPROVED DRILL-STOCK..
To all whom fit may 'concern Beit known that I, EDWARD A. S'roonron, of the.
city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have in vented an Improved Drill-Stock; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suliicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appel-trains, to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
l My invention relates to a new* mode of operating a drill-stock by means `of a friction-roller, placed in 'an inclined recess, or chamber, on the inside of the eye in the handle, so that, fby moving the handle in one direction, the roller is moved into a deeper portion of the recess, and the handle is allowed to turn freely in that direction; but by reversing the movement of the han-I die, the roller moves up the incline and binds against the stock, and moves it also, and at the same time the drill is fed by a screw in the usual manner.
To more fully describe my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, 'of' 'whioh- Figure l is a sectional elevation.
Figure 2 is an end view, showing the roller, the plate being removed.
Y Figure 3 is one of the side plates.
Similar letters of reference in each of the figures indicate like parts.
A. is a drill-stock, which'passes through an eye, a,
.in the handle B, having the collar b and feeding-apparatus C screwed on to its opposite end., p
In the handle, and opening into the eye, is an inclined recess, D, one side of which is deeper than the other, in which I place a small metal roller, E.
This roller serves to turn the drill-stock by friction, when the handle is turned in one direction. This is seen by examining lig. 2, as, when the handle is turned in one direction, the roller E falls into the deeper portion of the recess, and allows it to turn, but the instant the direction of the handle is reversed, it moves up the incline, and binds firmly, carrying the drillstock with it.
' A small piece of rubber, deeper side of therecess, so that when the roller falls into that part, to let the handle turn, the rubber will Vact as a, spring, and keep it ready to be caught, the instant the motion is reversed.
The drill is fed by a screw similar to those usually used.
By this construction, I am able to make adrill-stock that will be useful in any place Where a drill is required, and will be especially useful when it is to be used in a space of small compass, as it does not require to be turned any certain distance before it will bind, but no dierenoe how little motion of the handle can he got, that little is saved the instant the motion is reversed.
-Having thus described my invention,
c, is placed against the What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters PatA ent is rhe roller E, the inclined recess D, and the spring G, arranged in handle B, and combined with the drillstock A.,substautially as and for the` purpose described. "In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
EDWARD A. STGOKTON. [IL s] Witnesses: J. L. BOONE, GEO. H. STRONG.'
