Description

einem eine sAMUEL'AY-RES, or 'DANVILLIL KENTUCKY.,
Letters .Patent No. 94,270, dated August 31, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN TASTENINGS EORv BREASTPINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters VPatent and making part'` of the same.
To all who/m it may concern:
l lBe it known that I, SAMUELAYRES, o f Danville, in the county of Boyle, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and improved Pin-Catch for Breastpins', and'similar articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same," reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure -l represents an invertedplan view of a breast-pin provided with my improved pin-catch.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same. Figure 3 is an edge view of a modification of the same.` 'Similar 'letters of reference indicate correspondin parts.
This invention has for its-object to so construct breastpins, and other similar articles, such as badges, 85e., that they-can be secured togarments by means lof-an ordinary pin, in a secure manner, and with great convenience. Y
Breastpins as now made are providedV with pins,
which are inconvenient to apply, and which are apt to break orbecome dull, or bent, while by my invention, a common pin can be used, and when bent or worn, may be readily replacedby another.
The inventionconsists in the use cfa hook, spring, and catch, which. are arranged on the under side of the breastpin, in such manner that the desired object will be obtained. l
A, in the drawing, represents the body of a breastp1n.
, vFrom the under side projects a hook-shaped plate,
, a, which has its lower arm ilared out to facilitate the application of a pin.
b is a small lever, pivoted to a lug, c, thatprojects from A, and `held by a spring, d, of suitablev description, opposite the slot of the plate a, as shown.
e is an eye, projecting from the body A.
A pin, B, can, with its point, be fitted through the and for the purpose specified.
eye e, while its upper part is pushed into thehooklq, snapping over the lever b d, so that it will be held by the said lever b in the hook. v
Longitudinal displacement of the pin is in one direction prevented by its head, which 'strikes against the bocina, and in the other direction by a plate, f, projecting from the body A.
The device is applied by first putting the pin into the garment, then drawing -the eye e over its point, and then, bylateral motion, forcing the hook over it.
'When to be released, the catch b is swung so as to open the slot of a, when the breastpin is free to be taken oti.
The outer end of the lever' should be in such'a position that it can conveniently be reached to open the;- hook, and it may, for this reason, be either extended beyond the sideof the body, as in iig. 2, or lit may be turned up on narrow pins, as in iig". 3.
. I am aware that an English patent exists, where a device is shown which has the same object, and in some parts presents a similar aspect temine, but the similarity is more in appearance 4than reality, since the combination and arrangement of partsv to'secure the same results are materially di'erent. The device exhibited in that case is manifestly ill adapted to 'its purpose, andfinoperative in practice. However, I do not desire to claiml broadly any device which will accomplish the same end; but y What I do claim as of rmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. `The combination of the pivoted'lever b and spring d and hook B a, the said parts being each constructed and arranged with reference to one another, as shown and described.
2. The combination of the said lever, spring, and,
hook with the stay j and eye'c, on the breastpin, as
