Description

W. S. BUTLER.
V Muzzle-loading Fire-arm. No. 16,571. Patented Febl3, 1857.
N, PETERS PHOTQ-LITHOGRAPHEF. WASHINGTON. D c
UNITED STATES PATENT ornion.
WILLIAM S. BUTLER, OF ROCKYHILL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO BUTLER, SUGDEN & 00.,
OF SAME PLACE.
PISTOL.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
Tc all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM S. BUTLER, of the town of Rockyhill, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Pistols; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a view of the pistol with the side of the stock removed, showing the structure and position of the internal parts. Fig. 2, is a view of that part, or side, of the stock, which must be removed to insert the hammer, trigger, and springs.
My improvement consists in making the pistol by casting the barrel, and frame, or main part of the stock, (with its internal projections and recesses,) and the trigger guard, all in one piece.
I make the pistol of cast iron, or any other suitable metal, by casting the barrel, A, frame, or main part of the stock, B, with its projections on the concave surface, for holding the screws, as seen at a; b, and c, and to confine and sustain the mainspring, C, in its proper position, as seen at 0, (Z, and e, and spaces for the hammer, and trigger, as shown at g and h, and the trigger guard, D, all in one piece, as represented in Fig. 1.
I cast the barrel, A, solid, and drill the bore for the charge; or cast it hollow, and finish it in the usual way, (though I prefer the former.)
I make, and insert, the tube, or nipple, E, (for the cap,) in the usual way.
I make the hammer, F, of malleable cast iron, substantially, in the form shown in Fig. 1, with two conical projections, pivots, or trunnions, one of which is shown at 7:, Fig. 1, and the other is on the opposite side.
16,571, dated February 3, 1857.
These pivots, or trunnions work in conical recesses, or bearings, in the two parts of the stock, one of which is indicated by dots, at Z, Fig. 2.
I make the trigger of cast iron, substantially, in the shape shown at m, Fig. 1. This trigger is retained, and worked, in the lower part of the frame, or stock, by two projecting lips, shown at a, and the inner end, or sear part, is forced into the notches, near 0, by the spiral spring, shown at p, (or by any other suitable spring.)
I make the mainspring of steel, substantially, in the form shown at C, Fig. 1, and secure it between the projections, cl, and 6, while it rests against the curved projection, c, (to support it at different points while bending) all as seen in Fig. 1. I cast the other part of the stock, substantially, in the form shown in Fig. 2, with screw holes, as at a, b, and 0, Fig. 2, and of the proper concavity on the inside to allow room for the movable parts to work freely, and a conical recess, as indicated, by dots, at l, to serve as a bearing for the trunnion, is, Fig. 1.
Having made the several parts of the pistol, as before described, I place the hammer, trigger, and springs, in their proper position, in the frame, or main part of the. stock, as shown in Fig. 1, and place the other part of the stock, Fig. 2, in its appropriate place, and secure it by the screws, a, b, and 0, Fig. 2, when the pistol will be ready for use.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Constructing the pistol by casting the barrel, the frame, or main part of the stock, and guard, all in one piece, when the whole is constructed, arranged, and made to operate, substantially, as herein described.
WILLIAM S. BUTLER.
