To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. HARRING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Firearms, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to firearms but more particularly to magazine pistols. Firearms of this type are usually constructed with a very short stock in order to permit their being readily placed in the pocket and such construction necessarlly limits the capacity of the magazine as the latter usually extends lengthwise of the stock. Furthermore it is often desirable to use the pistol for target purposes and the like where the long stock is necessary to permit a firm grip upon the weapon.
The advantage of the present invention is that it permits the same pistol to be used both as a pocket and as a target weapon and permits the same to be quickly changed from one to the other when desired.
The features and advantages of this invention will be fully described in the specification and included in the claims.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention complete. Fig. 2, sectional view of a portion of the stock showing the method of attaching a lengthening member, as will be fully described hereinafter. Fig. 8, the lengthening member as will be described hereinafter. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modification of the invention as will be described hereinafter. Fig. 5, side elevation of magazine used in the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, as will be described hereinafter. Fig. 6, supplemental stock member of the type used in the modification shown in Fig. 4, as will be described hereinafter. Fig. 7, view of butt end of the stock shown in Fig. 4, as will be described hereinafter.
In the drawings, the device consists of a frame 10 upon which is a stock 11 provided with the usual side plates 12. Mounted on the frame 10 is the usual sliding member 13 containing the recoil spring and barrel common to this type of auto-loading weapon.
Within the stock 11 and open at the butt end thereof is a chamber 14 which is adapted to receive the magazine and the spring pressed catch 15 is provided to retain the magazine within the stock. In the normal construction of the weapon such as has been used heretofore, the stock ended on the line 16 and the magazine held a very limited number of cartridges. Such a short handle is very satisfactory when it is desired to carry the weapon in the pocket but when the same is to be used for target purposes, the handle is much too short to permit the user to obtain suflicient grip. To overcome this objection, a construction has been devised by which a longer magazine is provided having about its lower end a supplemental stock member 17 which forms a continuation of the regular stock when the longer magazine is slid into the chamber 14 in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The catch 15 normally engages the lower extremity of the magazine to hold same within the stock but when it is desired to use the long magazine and supplemental stock, this catch also acts to retain these parts in position as is shown in Fig. 2. The supplemental stock member 17 is preferably cut away at 18 to permit the operator to withdraw the catch 15 to release this member and permit the magazine to be withdrawn.
WVithin the chamber 14 is the plunger 19 pressed upwardly by the spring 20 to force the cartridges from the magazine into the operating parts of the weapon.
To convert the weapon from a pocket to a target pistol, withdraw the regular magazine in the usual manner by releasing the catch 15 and then insert the long magazine 21 shown in Fig. 3, into the chamber 14 and press it upward until the shoulder 22 forming the upper face of the supplemental stock member 17 comes in contact with the butt end of the stock in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The catch 15 will then enter, the recess 23 and lock the extension upon the stock. Thus it will be seen that a perfectly rigid stock of considerably increased length is provided for the weapon and the longer magazine will increase the number of cartridges which may be carried therein.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings, the supplemental stock member 24 is independent of the magazine 25 instead of being carried thereby as was the case in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1, 2 and In this embodiment, the
supplemental stock member is adapted to be secured to the butt end of the stock and for this purpose it is provided with a pin 26 adapted to enter a recess of similar curvature in the forward part of the butt, and with a catch 27 at the heel thereof. This catch 27 is adapted to engage the spring catch 28 in the stock of the pistol which normally is intended to retain the magazine in this stock. In the particular construction for attaching the stock to the supplemental stock member described, the latter is secured to the former by inserting the pin 26 into its recess and then swinging the member on this point of pivot until the catch 27 presses back the catch 28 from its normal position and the latter snaps into the catch of the former, in the position shown in Fig. i. At the butt end of the supplemental stock member is another catch 29 which is adapted to grasp the lower corner 30 of the magazine 25, shown in Fig. 5, when this magazine is inserted at this point and pressed upward through the magazine chambers of both the stock and the supplemental member into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. In this position the magazine acts as a support and with catches 26, 27, and 28 makes the sup plemental stock member 2a a rigid portion of the stock.-
The applicant is aware that a considerable number of changes in the construction and arrangement of parts might be made by any one skilled in the art without departing from the scope of his invent-ion so that he does not care to be limited to the particular embodiments herein shown and described.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a frame; a stock member on said frame; a magazine chamber in said stock member; a supplemental stock member adapted to be secured to said stock member; a magazine chamber in said supplemental stock member; and a magazine adapted to have a portion thereof within each of said chambers when said members are joined.
2. In a device of the class described, a frame; a stock member on said frame; a magazine chamber in said stock member; a supplemental stock member adapted to be secured to said stock member, a magazine chamber in said supplemental stock member forming a continuation of the magazine chamber in said stock member when said members are joined, and amagazine adapted to have a portion thereof within each of said chambers.
3. In a device of the class described, a frame; a stock member on said frame; a

4. In a device of the class described, a stock provided with a chamber to receive a magazine; and a magazine adapted to have one portion inserted into said chamber and the remaining portion thereof form a continuation of the side faces of said stock.
5. In a device of the class described, a stock; a chamber in said stock adapted to receive a magazine; and a magazine having one portion adapted to be inserted into said chamber and the remaining portion thereof enlarged to form a continuation of the side faces of said stock.
6. In a device of the class described, a stock, a magazine chamber within and having an opening at the butt end of said stock; a magazine adapted to be inserted into said chamber; and supplemental stock portion on said magazine and adapted to form a continuation of the side faces of said stock.
7. In a device of the class described, a stock; a magazine chamber within and having an opening at the butt end of said stock; a magazine adapted to have the upper portion thereof inserted into said chamber through said openings; and a supplemental stock member upon the lower portion of said magazine adapted to form a continuation of said stock.
8. In a device of the class described, a. stock; a magazine chamber within and having an opening at the butt end of said stock; a magazine adapted to be inserted into said chamber; a supplemental. stock member upon a portion of said magazine adapted to form a continuation of said stock; and means for locking said supplemental member to the butt end of said stock.
9. In a device of the class described, a stock; a magazine chamber within and having an opening at the butt end of said stock; a magazine adapted to have its upper portion inserted into said chamber; and a supplemental stock member upon the lower portion of said magazine adapted to have its upper face contact with the butt end of the stock and its side faces form a continua-- tion of the side faces of the stock.
