MW m m N E m FRANK F. LEWIS, OF JANESVILL'E, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOB TO LEWIS KNITTING CQl""-' PANY, 0F JA'N'ESVILLE, WESCONS'ZN'.
Application filed march 2?, 1888. 53-11- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK F. LEWIS, of J anesville, in the county of Rock and. State of Nisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwear; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in an improvement in underwear and relates especially to class of underwear known as union suits or one piece under garments.
This class of underwear has proved pope lar and has gone into extensive use largely owing to the fact that the weight oi such garments is carried by the shoulders and. hence obviates many of the objectionable features oi the two part suits, among which is the sagging of the drawers, end also the disarrengement of the undershirt about the waist portion of the bod Union suits as ordinarily made, ere formed of knitted elastic fabric which insures the wearer, freedom of movement without lie.- bility of overstraining and tearing the gen ment. The objections urged against this class of underwear is its clinging or form fitting nature, which is aggravating and causes con-- siderable discomfort in warm weather.
The object of my improvement is to ob viate these objectionable features by providing a union suit in which its whole front portion is made of inelastic or comparatively inelastic woven material, while its rwhole rearportion is made of elastic knitted material. As thus made, the inelastic front portion will not cling to the body, but will insure a perfectly loose and comic bio lit at all times, while the elastic rear inits perfect freedom of the danger of injury or tearing the gun 'With these objects in View my imcotion consists in certain features of coin and arrangement of parts and in: will be hereinafter described a i out in the claims.

1 represents the front portion of the meet hich is made of inelastic or comparatively inelastic woven material and 2 repre its its rear portion which made of elastic knitted material. lhe front end. reer portions are united across the shoulders by the seams 2" 4:; from the lower eo :s of the arm b to the bottom of the gar ient the 5, 6, from the crotch, the bottom by the seams 'l, 8. The front end portions may sired in of seems, whicl may be reinforced it deemed necessary.
garments embodying: my improve ment prevented from clinging to the body by providing a free oirculeuon. of about the body due to the looseness of lit or" the inelastic woven material oi which the front portion is made, while the elastic knitted fabric of which the rear ortion is made allows of-emple freedom oi movement of the wearer, without danger of tearing the garment.
The col transverse seems -for uniting the two halves of the garment, are
the short seams across the shoulders while the lonoitudinal seams on the opposite sides of the garment, and inside its leg rtions, firmly secure the two sections togotlie By this construction, the entire back the of oiastic knit-tel fabric, and of uniform elasticity throughout its length, while the entire ili'ronl' may be made of a continuous piece of com;)urutively inelastic fabric, which will. insure the free circulation of air to all por tions ol' the body. As thus constructed the guru-e1 .41 be produced at a minimum cost, and constitutes a very siglitly and finished article weer.

be united. by any do continuous piece and having the rear of its body portion and the rear of itsleg portions made of elastic Woven material, mid elastic material extending continuously from. the top to the lower edge of the garment and constituting the sole rear portion thereof, said garment having seams over the shoulders between the front and rear portions and having seams extending from the arm holes to the lower ends of the leg portions and from the crotch 10 to the lower end of the leg" portions.
in testimony whereof, I have signed this spmciiiuution in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
