Description
L. F. 'DQTY. UNDER-GARMENT.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 14, 1918.
Patented Sept. 20', 1921.
FATENT QFFlCE.
LrLLrAw FRANCES new; or. LA GRANGE, LLIivoIs.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LILLIAN Fnnivons.
DorY, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Grange, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented cert'ainnew and useful Improvements in Undergarments; and I do hereby declare the followmake and usethe same I V This inventlon relates to garments and particularly to'under' garments of'the union its edges at 6 and 7 to give the fullness type object of the invention is to provide a arment of knitted or other-material, in-
volvingsimplicity of construction without gussets, overlapping flaps-or buttons; also; to provide a garment cut on perpendicular form-fitting lines not depending on stretch of material but which is so formed as to fit the curves and lines of body with ease and comfort.
central front and centralback of body part' bein cut in one piece throws weave of ma terial transversely to that of the body portion where more elasticity is needed in bending of body.
Another object seams; and tor provide a garment'with an open crotch without flaps and yet has appearance of a closed. crotchwhen on the body; to provide a garment that covers the body completely without spreading or binding at any point; and to provide a garment out to fit without dependlng on the stretch of the material.
For the accomplishment of these and other objects of the invention as will be set forth in the following specification the invention consists of the construction, the combination, and in details and arrangements of the parts as more particularly described hereinafter relative to theembodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure 1 is a front view ofthe as applied to the human form.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the crotch, back and front forming gore.
garment One important feature of thepresent invention is the cut of the-"crotch,-
is to provide a garment complete in three sections and with few.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d t 20 2 Application filed November 14,1913. Serial No. 262,572.
.trated in'Fig. 3 at 2, this gore having an upper body-forming portion 3' and a lower limb-forming portion 4. The edge of this gore passing to the front of the form or lymg in the front portion of thecompleted garment is shown as outwardly curved as at to give the desired fullness of the gar-' ment at the bust while the lower portion is shown as'outwardly curved along each of around the ;-hips.' The upper and rear or back forming portion of the body part?) of the gore 2 is shown as cut 011 a concave line 8. The upper end of the side gore 2 is shown asprovided with a'V' shaped notch 9;
forming an arm hole when the end edges 10 ofthe gore are stitched together.
There is shown in Fig. 2 a plan view of a gore piece 12 which is substantially cruciform in outline and which when folded on the dotted line 13 transverse to the length ofthe gore forms front part 14 and a back 'part 15 while the wings at 16-16 when stitched to contiguous portions 4 of the side gores 2 form the crotch or insides of the legs or limbs of-the garment as at 17 Fig. 1-. The crotch partis slit at-18.. The portions 20 are formed or fulled out to provide width for the hips and back. To complete the garment one edge of the front portion 14 of the gore 12 is stitched to the adjacent side g0re.2 from a point approximatel indicated at A Fig. 3 up to the neck line g while the rear-forming portion 15 0f the ore 12 is stitched between the points C and%) along the adjacent portion of the side gore at the rear edge of the latter so that the entire garment is completely formed by the stitching together of the two side gores which are substantially oblong in form to the central gore 12.
One of the important features ofthe present invention resides in the cutting of the gores from knitted fabric and as clearly shown in Fig.2 the ribbing of the knitted fabric extends longitudinally of the central gore so that the latter has a very considerable degree of elasticity transversely of its length with the result that when the garment is applied the ribbing willbe laterally expanded as indicated at the line marked E in Fig. 1 around thebust and thus give the de- 7 between the thighs so that the inherent elasticity of the ribs of this material eliminates V sired fullness and p roduce a perfect fitting garment without unduly binding upon the parts of the figure, the parts being so cut as the straining of the garment and the binding thereof about the figure by readily stretching to conform to the enlargement in the girth'of the form. V w 7 It will be'seen from the above that I have provided an extremely simple garment of aminimum number of pieces which are cut in a peculiar manner of knitted or'other fabric so, that when the parts are stitched together the desired elasticity or stretching of the garment over the larger portions of the" anatomy is readily secured to permitthe bending movements.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I- have provided a'garment which is formed to fit the curves and lines ofvthe body with ease and comfort andin which the pieces are con- 'nected together with seams on perpendicular lines or that is'lines running parallel to the length of the garment and following the natural lines and curves'of the body. It involves no cross cutting and stitching and therefore eliminates the usual tendency of the garment to pucker at the seams extending transversely and which prevent the smooth fitting of the garment. Cutting and connecting the parts as herein disclosed produces a garment which fits without unnecessary strain being imposedupon the material and which eliminates an unnecessary degree of fullness around the waist line.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A nether garment made 0f knitted transversely elastic-fabric and in which the fabric is so disposed as to be expansible transversely or laterally toprovide increment in girth at the bust and around the.ab-,
domen, the garmentbeing formed of symmetrical side gores eachformed of a single piece and havlng. a body and ;a leg area and a central gore substantially cruciform inv outline extended from the thigh; up the front and the back to the neck, said'central gore being extended down to formthe inside portions of the legs of the side gores. V. a
2. A bifurcated union-garment including symmetrical side gores each formed of a single piece of material and having a body and a leg area and a one piece central gore secured at its longitudinal edges to the 'respectiv'e edges'of the sidegores, said central gore being of a substantially cruciform shaped piece and forming a portion of the back and front of the garment. V
3. A bifurcated union garment including symmetrical side gores each formedof a s1nglc piece of material and having a body and a leg area, a'one piece central gore secured at its longitudinal edges .to the respective edges of the side gores, said central gore being of a generally; cruciform shaped piece and forming aportion of the back and front of the garment by-extending from the thigh upthe front and back to the neck.
In testimon whereof I aflixmy signature.
