Description

1956 M. SILVERSTEIN 2,772,419
LADIES UNDERGARMENT Filed Feb. 25, 1956 F IG. l
INVENTOR.
MURRAY SILVERSTEIN HIS ATTORNEY.
United States Patent 2,772,419 LADIES UNDERGARMENT Murray Silverstein, Great Neck, N. Y. Application February 23, 1956, Serial No. 567,276 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-224) This invention relates to ladies garments and relates more particularly to a novel panty type of garment formed from only two blanks of material and having an improved crotch arrangement.
An important object of the invention is to provide a novel panty for ladies and children which permits the wearer to have maximum freedom of movement and which nevertheless conforms to the contour of the human body at all times, regardless of the position of the body in action or at rest.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel crotch section for a panty garment which is preferably of double thickness and which extends from the lower front central section rearwardly through the leg enclosing sections and then upwardly to the waist encircling section. The elongated blank which is employed for this crotch section is stretchable longitudinally thereof and this section is increased in length when the position of the wearer at rest or in action calls for such elongation without, however, imposing any strain or constriction on the body encircling section. When, however, the latter section of the garment must accommodate increased girth as when the wearer is in a sitting position this stretching is accomplished without imposing any lateral or longitudinal strain on the elongated crotch section.
This novel result is achieved without, however, providing side seams or front or back central vertical seams. Thus, the front of the garment is formed Without seams except for a short horizontal seam joining the forward end of the crotch blank to the other blank forming the main body enclosing section and the garment is completed with two vertical seams lying at points spaced from the rear vertical median line and which join this rear extension of the crotch blank to the free vertical edges of the main blank.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide an improved garment which exerts a uniform though controlled pressure around the legs of the wearer to insure against the leg sections creeping up on the wearer.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a rear elevation of the garment of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank used in forming the main body section of the garment.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank forming the crotch section, two of which are preferably employed to form a panel of double thickness.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the front of the garment.
The main blank is of generally rectangular shape and has an upper substantially straight edge 11, opposed side edges 12 which are upwardly and outwardly inclined, a lower edge having a plurality of concavely curved sections including a relatively short central edge section 13 and a pair of spaced, somewhat longer edge sections 14 which become substantially straight as shown at 15 and terminate at vertical edges 12. The term vertical as used in the specification and in the appended claim when referring to an edge of the blank refers to the position this edge occupies when the finished garment is on the person and the latter is in a standing position.
The grain line of the material in this blank is generally parallel with the central vertical median line of the blank and is stretchable longitudinally of the blank,
"ice
i. e., around the waist of the wearer. The blank will be somewhat stretchable in the direction of the median line but this stretchability should be of a lower order than in the other direction.
The second blank 16 which forms the crotch and rear waist enclosing section is of elongated shape and has a straight upper edge 17, a somewhat shorter, convexly curved, lower edge 18, and opposed side edges including straight upper edge section 19 and somewhat shorter curved lower edge sections 20. This blank is also made from material which is stretchable in the direction of its greater length. It was pointed out that this panel is preferably of double thickness and this construction considerably strengthens the garment.
In assembling the garment, edge 18 of the crotch blank is stitched to central lower edge 13 of the body blank to form stitch line 21 and edges 12 of the body blank are stitched to edges 19 to form stitch line 22. An elastic waist band 23 is now stitched to the upper edge of the garment, the material adjacent said edge being gathered as shown at 24. Also somewhat narrower elastic bands 25 may be secured to the edges of the leg openings and the garment is now complete. Instead of the elastic bands elastic threads may be used in forming a plurality of stitch lines.
While there have been described herein what are at present considered preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many modifications and changes may be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention. It is therefore to be understood that the exemplary embodiments are illustrative and not restrictive of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claim, and that all modifications that come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claim are intended to be included therein.
What I claim is:
A ladys panty comprising an upper waist enclosing section and a pair of leg encircling sections and formed from two blanks of generally elongated shape, one of said blanks enclosing a major portion of the body of the wearer and having a generally straight upper edge, a lower edge having a plurality of concave edge sections, and opposed, somewhat shorter generally vertical edges, said concave lower edge sections including a relatively short central section and sections on each side thereof which terminate at the outer ends in straight sections, said blank being stretchable in a direction extending around the waist of the wearer, the second blank being stretchably vertically thereof and having a straight upper edge forming the rear upper edge of the garment, a convexly curved lower edge, and opposed lower side edge sections of concave contour and substantially straight upper side edge sections, the latter edge sections being stitched to the opposed vertical edges of the first blank to form a body enclosing section, the lower edge of the second blank being stitched to the central concave lower edge section of the first blank to form a crotch section, the lower concave side edges of the second blank and the remaining lower edge sections of the first blank forming the lower edges of the leg encircling sections, and elastic bands secured to the upper and lower free edges of the garment, the upper edge of the second blank being puckered to provide added fullness upon upon stretching of the waist band.
