This invention relates to undergarments and particularly to improved shorts especially adapted for men, an object being to provide an improved construction which will at all times be comfortable and yield at desired places during the bending of the body of the wearer.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pair of shorts formed from a minimum number of parts with the parts so arranged that there will be a yielding action at the crotch and also a yielding action in the seat portion.

A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a pair of shorts wherein the body panels thereof form the lower leg portions of the shorts and the main parts coact with the body panels to form the upper leg portions connected by a resilient crotch structure stretchable fore and aft and a seat structure stretchable substantially circumferentially.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, l indicates a yoke structure divided at 2 and connected by suitable buttons 3. This yoke structure merges into a belt section 4 having elastic portions 5 and 6 of sufiicient length and strength to give the desired tension, whereby the waistline portion of the shorts will snugly fit the person wearing the garment, as illustrated particularly in Fig. 1. The yoke and belt formations are stitched at their lower edge to the upper edge of what may be termed the body portion 1 of the shorts. This body portion is divided at 2 in line with the division 2 to form a fly formation. The body structure is formed preferably of nonelastic textile material and is cut away at 8 to leave a large seat opening; also the parts are formed as illustrated particularly in Fig. 4 with the seat opening 3 merging into what may be termed acrotch opening 9. A transversely eX- tending crotch member 10 fills the crotch opening 9 and is elastic in a direction fore and aft of the garment. The seat opening 8 is filled with elastic material H which is preferably elastic substantially circumferentially of the garment. As illustrated particularly in Figs. 2' and 4, it will be seen that the elastic crotch member It forms parts of the leg sections l2 and it, but a small section or portion l4, as illustrated in Fig.4, is arranged to form the extreme lower edge portion of the legs in order that they will not be elastic. This entire arrangement is such that there is a fullness in the crotch as well as elasticity. In the seat the member H is substantially ovate in shape and presents a structure which will readily expand when the person wearing the garment bends forwardly thus putting this portion of the garment under tension.

In Fig. 6 the members l0 and II are shown lying flat and unconnected. In this figure as well as in Fig. 1, it will be seen that the side edges I5 and IE of member H are rounded and come together at point [1, which is a short distance below the belt 4. The curve of the lines I5 and [6 from point IT is outwardly or circumferentially and then inwardly toward the crotch member Ill. The ends of the crotch member it are formed as continuations of the side edges l5 and it, while the lower edge I8 of the crotch member Hi is arc-shaped to accommodate itself to the arc-shaped opening 19 arranged between the leg members l2 and I3, as shown in Fig. 1. This opening when the parts are lying substantially flat is almost half an ellipse. By this arrangement the crotch member II] presents a desired fullness and at the same time a continuation of the seat member I I, though it is arranged to stretch in a direction at right angles to the stretch of the seat.

The body portion 1 is preferably made from two pieces, namely, body panels or sections 1 and l, with these pieces arranged to form the fly 2' and the rear connected together by a seam 2t and to the seat member II. Each of the sections l and l are provided with puckers 1" adjacent the respective elastic sections 5 and 6 of the belt 4. In the crotch portion these members or panels are connected to the crotch member ID while the extreme lower ends of the leg portions of these panels are connected together by suitable seams 2|.

In Fig. 5 a slightly modified form of the invention is shown wherein the same reference numerals will be used for the same parts and additional reference numerals for the modified portions. As illustrated in this figure, a seat member I l is continued toward the front so as to form a crotch member ID. The greatest elasticity of the crotch member ID in this form of the invention is transverse rather than fore and aft as is true of the structure shown in Fig. 4. The seat member II at the upper part is principally stretchable circumferentially but as the lower and fore part of the panel approaches the line 2| the stretching action gradually changes to a transverse stretching action instead of a circumferentially stretching action. This is caused by the curvature of the various parts as the crotch member and seat member are formed of one piece.

It is to be understood that preferably the members 5, 6, l0 and II are of stretchable fabric and the remaining parts are of substantially nonstretchable textile fabric. However, if desired, any suitable fabric might be substituted provided the stretchability of the seat portion H and the crotch portion I0 is maintained.

I claim:

1. A pair of shorts including a pair of body sections of non-elastic textile fabric and a seat section of material elastic circumferentially and substantially non-elastic longitudinally of the garmerit, said seat section being substantially ovate in shape with the greatest diameter arranged substantially midway between the top and bottom of the garment and in the zone of the hip-line of the person wearing the garment with the pointed end of the seat section pointing upwardly and spaced downwardly from the waistline of the garment, said garment being non-elastic circumferentially at the back above said seat section, and a crotch member of material stretchable and elastic in one direction only secure-d along one edge to the lower end of said seat section positioned to stretch and be elastic fore and aft of g the garment.

2. A pair of shorts comprising a belt having elastic sections at substantially diametrically opposite points adapted to be positioned adjacent the sides of a person wearing the garment and on the waistline, a pair of body sections of nonelastic textile fabric secured along their upper edges to the lower edge of said belt, said body sections being puckered adjacent the elastic sections in said belt to permit said elastic sections to function, and a seat section of material elastic circumferentially and substantially non-elastic longitudinally of the garment, said seat section being substantially ovate in shape with the greatest diameter arranged substantially midway between the top and bottom of the garment and in the zone of the hip-line of the person wearing the garment with the pointed end of the seat section pointing upwardly and spaced downwardly from the waistline of the garment, said garment being non-elastic circumferentially at the back above said seat section.
